Raiders Outscore Opponents 13-1 in Sioux Center

Kvatek drives in six runs on the day

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Northwestern (10-0, 0-0 GPAC) used high-scoring innings and strong efforts in the circle to pick up two wins today, keeping their unbeaten record intact against Dakota State (S.D.) (0-2, 0-0 NSAA) and William Penn (0-3, 0-0 Heart).

"What we worked on this week was all about toughness," commented senior infielder Jennifer Boeve. "Today we showed how we created our own energy, how we can move on quickly from things that go wrong in a softball game, and celebrate when things go well. We wanted to focus on what is going well and worry about the team rather than ourselves."

How It Happened
Northwestern used a six-run third inning and stellar defense and pitching to maintain their winning streak on Friday.

The Raiders got things started in the third when Ashtyn Billings (Fr., Ankeny, Iowa) hit a one-out single, followed by a walk on a full count for Charli Bomgaars (So., Boyden, Iowa). After employing a double-steal on the next at-bat, Jennifer Boeve (Sr., Hastings, Neb.) singled to drive the opening runs.

Later in the inning with runners on the corners, Emily Strasser (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) drove home Boeve to make the score 3-0. Chloe Gallegos (So., Carrol, Iowa) kept the Raider offense rolling, sending home Madysn Grotewold (Jr., Larchwood, Iowa) on an RBI single to center field, putting the Raiders lead at 4-0.

With two outs and the bases loaded, Maddie Kvatek (Jr., Stevens Point, Wis.) ripped the ball to center to bring two more runs across the plate and help Northwestern bat around for the inning, going up 6-0.

Kate Kralik (So., Indianola, Iowa) continued to be dominant in the circle, not allowing a hit until the fifth inning and not giving up a run until the sixth.

Dakota State got into the scoring column in the sixth, taking advantage of a leadoff single when Hannah McFarland hit a two-out triple to deep left field, but that would be all the offense the Trojans would find in the game.

Northwestern added one more run to their already impressive lead in the final frame as Cassidy Gors (Fr., Tea, S.D.) knocked in her first-career RBI, cementing a 7-1 Red Raider win.

Game Notes
  • Kate Kralik earned her third win of the season, pitching a complete game with 10 strikeouts.
  • Emily Strasser was the only batter for either team with multiple hits.
  • Maddie Kvatek went 1-3 with two RBI.
  • Jennifer Boeve went 1-4 with two RBI.
  • The Raiders only struck out twice as a team while drawing four walks.

How It Happened
Kameryn Etherington (Jr., Algona, Iowa) threw a complete game shutout as the Raiders defeated William Penn 6-0 in the second game of Friday's twinbill.

The Raiders put a run on the board in the opening frame, as Jennifer Boeve drew a leadoff walk, and a bunt single from Madysn Grotewold put runners on first and second. A pair of fielder's choices helped Boeve cross home plate for the first run of the game.

Northwestern added on to their lead in the second, as with runners at the corners, Charli Bomgaars dropped down a sacrifice bunt that allowed Gwen Mikkelsen (Jr., Casa Grande, Ariz.) to score.

After giving up a hit in the first inning, Etherington only allowed one hit in the next three innings, while the Raiders extended their lead in the fifth. The first three runners got on for Northwestern, setting up Maddie Kvatek in the cleanup spot. With the bases loaded, Kvatek lasered a single to right center, hitting a bases-clearing triple and putting her team up 5-0. Northwestern added their sixth run of the day two at-bats later when Mikkelsen hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Kvatek to score.

Northwestern shut William Penn down the rest of the way, as their closest threat was a one-out double before Etherington shut down the final two batters and secured the win.
