Northwestern Wins Two More at Dordt Dome Classic

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Northwestern (12-0, 0-0 GPAC) swept another weekend series, closing out the weekend 4-0 at the Dordt Dome Classic at the American State Bank Sports Complex. On Saturday, the Raiders defeated Mayville State (N.D.) and Peru State (Neb.).

GAME 1: NWC 9, Mayville State 1 (5 innings)

Pitching Decisions
Win: Ellie Jacobson (1-0)
Loss: Courtney Boll (0-1)
Save: None

How It Happened
Northwestern got on the board first, as Maddie Kvatek (Jr., Stevens Point, Wis.) brought Jennifer Boeve (Sr., Hastings, Neb.) home after reaching on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning.

The Raiders added three additional runs in the second, with Kameryn Etherington (Jr., Algona, Iowa) driving in two runs on a single to left. In the next at-bat, Boeve hit a sacrifice fly to left that allowed Ashtyn Billings (Fr., Ankeny, Iowa) to score.

The third inning was where the bats really came alive for the Raiders, scoring five runs on four hits. Emily Strasser (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) ripped a double to right that scored Kvatek from second, while an error on the following at-bat brought Strasser home for the sixth run of the game. Later in the inning, Billings and Etherington hit RBI singles in consecutive plate appearances, pushing Northwestern ahead 8-0. Boeve then hit a two-out single to left field that allowed Madysn Grotewold (Jr., Larchwood, Iowa) to score from second.

Though Mayville State entered the scoring column in the fourth, it was not enough as the mercy rule went into effect after the fifth inning, sending the Raiders to their 11th win of the season.

Game Notes
  • Ellie Jacobson earned her first win of the year, giving up just three hits over five innings in the circle.
  • Kameryn Etherington drove in three runs on a 2-2 day at the plate.
  • Her home run was the first round-tripper for Northwestern this season.
  • Jennifer Boeve had two RBI with a run scored.
  • Northwestern stole three bases.

GAME 2: NWC 5, Peru State 1

Pitching Decisions

How It Happened
A slow start did not deter Northwestern in the final game of the weekend, as they overcame a 1-0 deficit with a strong fourth inning to move to 12-0.

Peru State got the bats going early, picking up three hits and a run in their half of the first.

It was not until the third inning that Northwestern got their first hit, while their first run came across the plate in the fourth.

The Raiders used two-out lightning in the fourth as Strasser hit a double deep to center that allowed Gwen Mikkelsen (Jr., Casa Grande, Ariz.) to score and tie the game. Etherington followed Strasser's at-bat with an RBI of her own, a single to left that gave Northwestern a 2-1 lead.

Entering on a pinch-hit opportunity, Ellie Jacobson (Jr., Humboldt, Iowa) reached on an error where two runs scored to extend the lead and the inning.

Neither team scored again until the top of the sixth, as Etherington smacked a leadoff home run to left center, the first deep ball of the season for the Raiders.

After surrendering a leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh, Kate Kralik (So., Indianola, Iowa) finished the game with three strikeouts and closed out a 5-1 Northwestern win.

Game Notes

"Being tough is an important part of our program and today we were the toughest team," said junior infielder Gwen Mikkelsen.

Junior outfielder and catcher Maddie Kvatek commented, "We did a great job competing today. I'm really proud of this great group of people!"

Up Next: The Raiders will play one more weekend at the Dordt Dome Classic, facing Dakota State (S.D.) and (RV) Bellevue (Neb.) on Friday, February 24.
