Raiders Power into Final Week of the Regular Season

Northwestern set to battle Dordt and Hastings prior to GPAC tournament

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The (RV) Northwestern College women's basketball team (18-8, 13-7 GPAC) hit the hardwood for one final week of the regular season as they welcome No. 4-ranked Dordt to the Bultman Center on Wednesday and traveling to battle the Hastings Broncos on Saturday in Hastings, Neb.

THE SHOOTAROUND
  • NAIA TOP-20: free throw percentage (8th), FG% (9th), and Assists/Game (18th).
  • Emilee Danner took the team lead with her fourth double-double against Morningside, Schany is close behind with her three. Maddie Jones became the third Raider to record one this season in the win against Mount Marty.
  • The Raiders have held 13 opponents this season to under 40% shooting from the floor, improving to 13-0 in those games.
  • Northwestern has shot 50% or better from the floor in SIX games this season.
  • Maddie Jones had a game-high 17 points, notching her first-career double-double, and 10 rebounds in the 78-58 Senior Day win over Mount Marty.    
  • Northwestern sits second in the GPAC in field goal percentage (45.7), opponents FG% (39.1), blocks per game (2.9), and free throw percentage (75.8).
  • Three Raiders sit averaging double figures still this season entering the 2023 calendar year: Molly Schany (14.2), Maddie Jones (14.0), and Emilee Danner (10.3).
SENIOR DAY FUN
  • Two seniors scored in double digits in the 78-58 Senior Day win over Mount Marty on Saturday, as Maddie Jones led the team with 17 points and Emilee Danner had 14.
  • Jones notched her first-career double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while also being just one assist shy of a triple-double.
  • Taylor VanderVelde notched nine points on her Senior Day contest, as well.
  • NWC held their 13th opponent of the season to under 40% shooting from the floor in the victory.
WHAT'S AT STAKE?
  • In the final week of the regular season, the last jostling for seeding in the conference tournament is set to commence.
  • NWC enters the week tied for sixth-place with DWU, though the Tigers hold the tiebreak after winning both regular season meetings.
  • With Briar Cliff downing Jamestown in Sioux City on Saturday, the two teams move into a tie for second-place, both sitting 15-5 in GPAC play.
  • Concordia slides up to fourth-place at 14-6 in the GPAC, with NWC holding the tiebreaker in that series, should it be needed.
IN GOOD COMPANY
  • 236 NAIA schools sponsor women's basketball…NWC sits top-45 in five different statistical categories.
  • The Raiders are top-10 in free throw percentage (4th) and field goal percentage (7th).
  • NWC is top-45 in assists per game (19th), 3-point percentage (25th), rebounding margin (T37th) and points per game (41st) this season.
MAKING THE FREE THROWS COUNT
  • Two Red Raiders are shooting 80+% from the free throw line this season (min. 25 att.).
  • NWC sits eighth in the NAIA in free throw percentage (75.8%) which sits second in the GPAC, behind Concordia's 78.2% mark.
  • Maddie Jones leads the way at 84.9% (107-126) and she has attempted the most on the team, eclipsing the 100-attempt mark in the game against Concordia (Neb.) on Jan. 21.
  • Jones eclipsed the 100 made free throws mark in the win over the College of Saint Mary on Feb. 1.
  • Jones sits with the second most attempts in the GPAC, behind Doane's Hatcliff (216) and she sits third in the league in FT% (min. 50 attempts) – behind Doane's Rylie Rice (86.9) and Briar Cliff's Konnor Sudmann (86.2).
TOP-LEVEL TEAM DEFENSE
  • NWC holds opponents to a mere 39.1% field goal percentage and 61.3 points per game, which sits fifth and fourth in the GPAC, respectively.
  • 13 times this season, NWC has held opponents to sub-40% shooting from the floor and are a perfect 13-0 in those games.
RECORD BREAKERS!
  • Northwestern could not miss in the first road win over Morningside since 2018, shooting a new single-game program record of 72.2% from the floor (39-for-54).
  • NWC separated themselves from the Mustangs in the third quarter, shooting a phenomenal 14-for-15 (93.3%).
  • It breaks the previous record of 67.7% (42-of-62) set against Missouri Baptist in the 2011-12 season. NWC won 103-60 on December 29, 2011.
SERIES HISTORY – DORDT
  • NWC and Dordt are set to meet for the 91st time on Wednesday with Northwestern leading the all-time series 70-20.
  • Dordt won the first meeting of the season, 65-55 in Sioux Center back on December 7, handing NWC their first loss of the season.
  • The Raiders have won seven-straight games against Dordt inside the Bultman Center.
  • Kristin Rotert holds a 1-2 record against the Defenders in her time leading the program.
SERIES HISTORY – HASTINGS
  • NWC and Hastings are set to meet for the 62nd time on Saturday in Nebraska, as the Broncos hold the 33-28 all-time series lead.
  • Northwestern prevailed 58-53 against Hastings in Orange City, back on January 7 when the two teams met after playing a game the previous night on January 6.
  • Northwestern looks for their first win in Hastings in the Rotert era.
  • Overall, Rotert is 2-1 against the Broncos with both wins coming in Orange City.
SCOUTING THE DEFENDERS
  • Dordt clinched the GPAC regular season title and the No. 1-seed in the upcoming conference tournament with their 99-65 win over Doane on Senior Day in Sioux Center.
  • The Defenders now sit 25-1 (19-1 GPAC) on the season and are ranked No. 4 in the NAIA.
  • Five Defenders notched double digits in the blowout win over Doane, led by 18 points from Karly Gustafson.
  • Dordt is led by two scorers north of 16 points per game on the season in Karly Gustafson (16.9) and Bailey Beckman (16.8).
SCOUTING THE BRONCOS
  • Hastings enters the game with an 9-17 record (5-14 GPAC) and currently is on the outside looking in for the conference tournament, sitting in ninth-place, two games behind the Doane Tigers (7-13 GPAC).
  • Allison Bauer leads the Broncos in scoring this season, the lone Bronco in double digits, averaging 10.9 points per game.
  • Dawson Knode leads the team with her 6.4 rebounds, while Mariyah Avila paces the team with her 2.3 assists per contest.
Up Next: The Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) tournament is on deck for the Red Raiders as the Quarterfinals are set for Wednesday, February 22. Seed, opponent, location, and start time will all be determined at a later date.
