Northwestern and Georgetown Meet for First Time in NAIA FCS Semifinals

Winner advances to national championship game in Durham, N.C.

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The top-ranked National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Northwestern College football team (12-0, 10-0 GPAC) will conclude the home slate for the 2023 season on Saturday, December 9 when the Tigers of Georgetown College (Ky.) (10-1, 6-0 Mid-States) comes to town for the first-ever meeting in program history in the Semifinals of the NAIA Football Championship Series (FCS). NWC NOTABLES
  • Northwestern and Georgetown set to meet for the first-time ever on the gridiron on Saturday.
  • NWC is coming off their sixth-straight FCS win with a 34-17 win over Saint Xavier (Ill.).
  • The Red Raiders win streak is up to 26-straight games.
  • Northwestern is the only remaining unbeaten team in the NAIA following the Grand View loss last weekend.
  • The 10 interceptions from Cody Moser continues to hold the national lead.
  • With one more, he would set the single-season program record for INTs (available records back to 1998 season only).
  • Northwestern is now 21-7 in the month of November under head coach Matt McCarty.
  • In December under McCarty, the Red Raiders are 3-1; winning their last three games.
  • The Red Raiders took a weekly honor from the league office in nine of the 11 weeks this season.
  • NWC is 23-0 with Jalyn Gramstad as the starting quarterback.
  • NWC leads the GPAC in total yards per game (433.7), passing yards per completion (13.8), passing yards per attempt (9.4).
  • The Raiders scored 65 touchdowns this season: 34 rushing, 30 passing, and one defensive (pick-six).
  • Northwestern was ranked No. 1 all season long, holding the unanimous top spot the entire regular season.
  • Konner McQuillan continues to lead the conference in rushing touchdowns (18) and is second in the conference in rushing yards per game (91.4).
  • Michael Storey continues to sit atop the GPAC in receiving touchdowns (13).
  • Trystin Voss took the team lead in sacks (6) with his sack last week against Saint Xavier.
  • Northwestern has pitched two shutouts this year: at Mount Marty (42-0), vs. Dordt (FCS) (7-0).
  • Since 2020 when the deep playoff runs began for Northwestern, NWC is one of eight NAIA programs to make the NAIA Football Championship Series (FCS) (see p. 5 of notes for full list of teams).
2023 GPAC CHAMPIONS!
  • For the first time since the 1996 season, back when the conference was the NIAC, the Northwestern College football team are the outright conference champions!
  • It marks the first outright GPAC title in program history – tied for the title in 2000 and 2014.
  • It's the first GPAC title for head coach Matt McCarty, to go along with his 2022 NAIA National Championship.
  • The Red Raiders will be presented their championship trophy and banner following the game on Saturday.
AFCA NAIA REGION IV COACH OF THE YEAR
  • Announced on Wednesday, HC Matt McCarty was named the AFCA NAIA Region IV Coach of the Year for the second-straight season.
  • It marks his third-career NAIA Region Coach of the Year honor.
  • He was the 2022 AFCA NAIA National Coach of the Year after leading the program to their first national title since 1983.
FAST STARTS
  • Northwestern has gotten off to fast starts this season, outscoring opponents 92-23 in the first quarter this season.
  • Only Concordia (Neb.), Midland, and Morningside, Jamestown, and Saint Xavier have scored on the Red Raider defense in the first quarter.
  • NWC has held six opponents (Drake, Doane, Mount Marty, Hastings, Briar Cliff, Dordt (x2), Dakota Wesleyan) scoreless in the first 15 minutes of play.
RECORD BOOK WATCH
  • With the win against Dakota Wesleyan, quarterback Jalyn Gramstad
    • Moves up to eighth all-time in career passing yards (5,738).
    • He's just the 10th Red Raider quarterback to notch 5,000 career passing yards.
    • Moves into sole possession seventh all-time in passing TDs (55).
    • With his rushing score against SXU, he moves into 10th all-time in career rushing TDs (31).
  • Konner McQuillan has moved into fifth all-time in program history in career rushing yards (3,455).
    • His rushing score last week against SXU moves him into sole possession of fourth-place in career rushing scores (47), passing Jacob Kalogonis (2016-19).
  • Michael Storey passed C. Moser for second all-time in career receiving yards (4,439).
    • He passed Solberg for the program's all-time leader in career receptions in the FCS win over Dordt.
    • Entering the FCS, he's on the hunt to pass Solberg for the program's all-time receiving yards mark, needing 337 yards to break the record.
    • He remains on the hunt for chasing down Moser and S. Solberg for career TD receptions (47 & 49, respectively), sitting with 42.
    • He's just the third Red Raider to have 40 or more receiving touchdowns in their career.
  • Cody Moser needs just four interceptions to crack the program's top-10 all-time INT list.
CODY MOSER – THE BALL HAWK
  • Converted cornerback turned safety, Cody Moser has made the transition this season look effortless this season.
  • His 10 interceptions continues to lead the NAIA.
  • His 10th INT last week against SXU tied the program single-season record (records only available back to 1998).
  • His two interceptions against Hastings was his first-career multi-interception game.
  • He recorded his second multi-interception game (2) against Dakota Wesleyan last week (Nov. 4).
  • He had a streak of four-straight games with a pick this season.
  • In his Red Raider career, he's recorded 11 interceptions.
  • He now needs just five picks to crack the top-10 all-time list in Red Raider football history.
EVEN BIGGER WIN IN DES MOINES
  • Northwestern downed NCAA FCS Drake back on September 9, 27-24, in overtime.
  • After starting the season with three-straight losses, the Bulldogs ran the table in the Pioneer Football League (PFL) with an 8-0 record to receiver the league's automatic bid to the NCAA FCS Playoffs.

  • Saturday calls for temps in the mid-30s, with a high of 36 degrees.
  • It's expected to be partly cloudy with a 6% chance of precipitation (as of Thursday afternoon).
  • Winds expected to be out of the WNW at 5 to 10 mph.
