Red Raiders Rout Tabor in Nonconference Finale

Van Kalsbeek tallies season-high 27 points

HILLSBORO, Kan. – Alex Van Kalsbeek scored a season-high 27 points as the Northwestern men's basketball team (12-2, 5-1 GPAC) went on the road to defeat Tabor (Kan.) (4-8, 1-5 KCAC), 95-62 in non-conference action.

"Our guys got better today," commented head coach Kris Korver. "We defended, rebounded, ran the floor and shared the ball."

In a game where the Raiders never trailed, Van Kalsbeek put up six of Northwestern's first eight points to open up an 8-4 lead through three minutes of play. Northwestern gained its first 10-point differential, taking a 17-6 lead on a three by Dillon Carlson as part of his 12-point scoring effort on the day. The Raider advantage got up to 20 points with 5:02 until the break on a Carlson jumper, making it 37-17, a lead that would grow to as many as 22 before the break on a Van Kalsbeek bucket, adding to his 20 first-half points.

"Alex got going early and our guys did a great job getting him the ball," Korver said.

The Raider men kept their foot on the pedal through the latter 20 minutes, opening up the second half on a 7-2 run kicked off by a three from Zach LaFave. Adding to the lead throughout the game, Kaleb Booth knocked down a trey to reach a 39-point margin, the largest of the game, with 6:35 remaining.

Northwestern closed out the game strong, getting contributions from Kasen Bailey, Carter Van Hulzen and Marcus Kelderman on the way toward a 95-62 win.

"It was good to get our guys on the floor again before we begin the second half of GPAC play," noted Korver. "The league is tough and we will encourage this group to keep improving as the season moves along."
