NWC set to play at home for the first time this season

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – Following a pair of wins in Chicagoland on opening weekend, the Northwestern College women's basketball team (2-0, 0-0 GPAC) return to Orange City to play in front of the home crowd in the annual Pizza Ranch Classic Friday and Saturday, November 10-11 against the Mayville State (N.D.) Comets and the Saint Mary (Kan.) Spires.

THE SHOOTAROUND
  • Head coach Kristin Rotert is five wins away from moving into fifth all-time in program history in career wins.
  • Northwestern has started each of the last two seasons with back-to-back wins under Rotert.
  • Molly Schany is averaging 21.0 points per game early this season; sitting second in the GPAC in scoring and rebounding (9.5rpg).
  • Newcomers Kaydin Davis (10.5ppg) and Emily TerWee (10.5ppg) making an immediate impact on the court with double-digit scoring averages.
  • Rebounding has been a strong point: In the NAIA, sitting sixth in rebounding margin (23.5) and T10th in rebounds per game (50.5).
  • NWC was picked to finish fifth in the GPAC Preseason Poll.
  • Schany is the lone All-American returning on this year's roster (2021-22).
HOT START FOR SCHANY
  • Averaging nearly a double-double to start the season, the offense has been going through senior forward Molly Schany.
  • She notched her 13th-career double-double in the season opener with 20 points and 11 rebounds against IU Northwest.
  • She has scored 20 points in both games this season with a high of 22 against Trinity Christian College.
  • She's shooting a blistering 77.3% from the floor.
  • The performance in Chicago earned her Raider Athlete of the Week honors.
ROTERT'S RAIDERS…
  • Are 25-3 when totaling fewer turnovers than the opponent (12-0 in 2021-22).
  • Are 24-9 when outrebounding the opponent.
  • Are 8-7 against teams ranked inside the NAIA Top-25 Coaches' Poll (at the time of the contest).
SERIES HISTORY – MAYVILLE STATE
  • Friday marks just the sixth meeting all-time between Northwestern and Mayville State.
  • NWC leads the series 4-1 but it was Mayville State prevailing in the last meeting (Nov. 4, 2017).
  • The Red Raiders are 2-0 against the Comets in Orange City.
  • This will be the first-ever meeting against Mayville State for Rotert.
SERIES HISTORY – SAINT MARY
  • Saturday will mark the third-ever meeting between the Red Raiders and the Spires.
  • Northwestern has won both previous meetings, winning the last one 109-28 back in 2005 (Nov. 25).
  • Like Mayville State, this will be the first meeting against the Spries for Rotert.
SCOUTING THE COMETS
  • Entering still ranked No. 22 in the NAIA (Coaches' Poll 1), the Comets are 3-0 on the young season with already a win over GPAC-foe Jamestown (81-66, Nov. 2).
  • Mayville State was edged by Dakota State in the 2023-24 North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) preseason coaches' poll, picked to finish second with three first-place votes.
  • A high-powered offense, MSU has averaged 91.0 points per game.
  • In the first three games, the Comets have three double-digit scorers; led by Mackenzie Hughes (Jr., G) who is averaging 20.7 points per game.
  • Jordan Zrust (Gr., G) paces the team with her 8.3 rebounds per game.
SCOUTING THE SPIRES
  • Saint Mary also enters the Pizza Ranch Classic undefeated with a 2-0 record with wins over Benedictine (Kan.) and Park (Mo.).
  • The Spires are averaging 74.0 points per game and shooting at a clip of 43.3% from the floor.
  • Saint Mary is a threat from deep, shooting an impressive 40.7% from deep (24-for-59); led by Alanis Delgado who is shooting 46.2% (6-for-13) from downtown.
  • A pair of Spires are averaging double digits per game in Tanea Sims (Sr., F) at 17.5ppg and Delgado (Jr., G) averages 14.0ppg.
  • Sims also leads the team in rebounding early in the year (7.0rpg), while senior Paige Pendley snags 6.0 boards per contest.

  • November 8-14 is College Sports Communicators (CSC) Membership Appreciation Week, presented by ESPN.
  • The NWC Athletic Communications staff – Steve Carlson (Director of Athletic Communications) and Bradley Laackmann (Assistant Director of Athletic Communications) – are proud members of CSC, the professional organization for athletic communications professionals of all varieties (SIDs, content creators, creatives, etc.).
