Volleyball Advances to GPAC Semis with Sweep of Doane

Northwestern advances to GPAC Semifinals for first time since 2020

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The No. 1-ranked Northwestern College volleyball team (24-2, 14-2 GPAC) swept the Doane Tigers (8-19, 6-10 GPAC) for the second time this season in the Quarterfinals of the 2023 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Tournament, advancing to the semifinals for the first time since 2020. After the match, the Red Raiders were presented their GPAC Regular Season title trophy by GPAC Commissioner Corey Westra.
Doane came out swinging in the opening set, looking to make noise in the GPAC tournament. The Tigers never led in the opening set, but stayed within two points for most of the set. Knotted up at 14-14, it appeared the Red Raiders got some breathing room with three-straight points with a pair of kills from Jazlin De Haan (Jr., Orange City, Iowa). However, Doane would not fold and would score two-straight to pull within one at 17-16. NWC would lead 21-19, when they would go on to take four of the next five points to take the opening set, 25-20.

The Tigers would continue to fight in the second set, holding their first lead of the match with a 3-1 lead early. Northwestern responded with three-straight points to take the lead, but the two teams would battle it out again. Savonne Sterk (Jr., Lynden, Wash.) took over the second set with her four well-time momentum grabbing kills. Once again, when the Tigers were showing some fight, Sterk picked up a pair of kills in quick succession to give the momentum back to the Red Raiders. Opening up a 20-17 lead thanks to an Alysen Dexter (Jr., Urbandale, Iowa) kill, Doane would claw back to within one again. However, kills from Sterk, Dexter, and De Haan would ensure a NWC victory and go up 2-0 with a 25-22 set two victory.

Northwestern poured it on in the third set, hitting at a blistering clip of .391 to pick up their 22nd sweep of the season. Jumping out to a 9-2 lead, the Red Raiders didn't allow the Tigers to claw back in the final set. After a Doane time out, the run continued as NWC went on a 9-3 spurt to lead it 17-5. Leading 21-10 late, the Red Raiders wended it with four-straight points.
