Back-to-Back Goals Lead Northwestern Past Tigers

Aspas with career-high in saves

ORANGE CITY, Iowa  – Goals on consecutive possessions helped Northwestern (8-3-1, 4-1-1 GPAC) to a win over Dakota Wesleyan (4-5-1, 0-4-1 GPAC) in front of the home crowd on Wednesday evening.

Northwestern was on the board first as Stan van den Beld (Jr., Voorhout, Netherlands) found the back of the net for the ninth time this season off of the pass from Riley Aarbo (Jr., Sioux Falls, S.D.), giving the Raiders a 1-0 lead.

Then, just after the kickoff following the goal, Jacey McFaddin (Sr., Spijkenisse, Netherlands) put a pass onto the foot of Menkem Mehri (So., Worthington, Minn.), who scored for the first time in his career. The quick onslaught put the Raiders ahead 2-0 heading into the break.

Northwestern had another chance to add to the lead in the second when McFaddin drew a penalty in the box, setting up Marco Alessio (Sr., Chioggia, Italy) for the penalty kick attempt. Alessio's shot careened off the crossbar, but the Raider defense continued to hold down the Tigers for their seventh shutout of the year.

Despite the lack of goals scored, Dakota Wesleyan was aggressive on the attack with 10 shots on goal to Northwestern's nine. Eight attempts came in the second half alone.

"We didn't play our best match tonight. However, I was pleased that we kept another shutout," said head coach Dan Swier. "We capitalized on a couple of first half chances and that was enough to get the three points."

The Raiders will look to extend their winning streak to four on Saturday, and Northwestern has not lost since September 16.
