Red Raiders to Tip-Off Season in Chicagoland

NWC returns a pair of All-Conference performers to the roster

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern College women's basketball team (0-0, 0-0 GPAC) are set to open the 2023-24 season this weekend with a trip to the Chicagoland area with a pair of games against Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foes on Friday and Saturday.

THE SHOOTAROUND
  • Head coach Kristin Rotert is seven wins away from moving into fifth all-time in program history in career wins.
  • Northwestern has started each of the last two seasons with wins under Rotert.
  • NWC returns their top two leading scorers from last season in Maddie Jones (14.6ppg) and Molly Schany (14.4ppg).
  • The Red Raiders also return the team's leading 3-point shooter from a season ago in Hali Anderson (36.3%).
  • This season starts the second-straight season with a lengthy road trip for the Red Raiders, after starting last season in the state of Kansas.
  • The Red Raiders welcome seven newcomers to the varsity roster in 2023-24: six freshmen and one transfer.
  • NWC was picked to finish fifth in the GPAC Preseason Poll.
  • Schany is the lone All-American returning on this year's roster (2021-22).
  • NWC has a pair of scrimmages under their belt heading into the regular season.
DOMINANT SECOND HALVES (2022-23)
  • Northwestern dominated second halves last season, outscoring opponents 1,138-947 (+191) in the third and fourth quarters.
  • The Red Raiders scored the most points of any quarter in the third quarter (579), followed by 559 in the fourth quarter.
  • NWC sat +100 on all opponents in the third quarter.
ROTERT'S RAIDERS…
  • Are 25-3 when totaling fewer turnovers than the opponent (12-0 in 2021-22).
  • Are 23-9 when outrebounding the opponent.
  • Are 8-7 against teams ranked inside the NAIA Top-25 Coaches' Poll (at the time of the contest).
SERIES HISTORY – IU NORTHWEST
  • Northwestern and IU Northwest are meeting for just the second time ever on Friday.
  • NWC won the first meeting in the NAIA Division II tournament back in 2010, coming away with an 100-47 victory.
  • It's the second all-time meeting on a neutral floor between the two teams.
  • It's the first meeting for Rotert against IU Northwest.
SERIES HISTORY – TRINITY CHRISTIAN
  • Trinity Christian and Northwestern will meet for the eighth time on Saturday.
  • NWC holds the 7-0 record in the series.
  • Dating back to 2008, NWC is 2-0 against the Trolls in Palos Heights, averaging 102 points in those two meetings.
  • Rotert is 1-0 against the Trolls with an 83-61 win last season in the Bultman Center at the Pizza Ranch Classic.
SCOUTING THE REDHAWKS
  • Indiana Northwest opened their season this past weekend, taking on the Pilots of Bethel University (Ind.).
  • The RedHawks are receiving 11 votes in the NAIA Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • Last season, the RedHawks finished second in the CCAC (17-3) and falling to top-seeded IU South Bend in the CCAC Championship game.
  • Despite falling in the tournament title game, the RedHawks earned an at-large bid to the NAIA national tournament, falling to eventual national champions Clarke (Iowa), 67-61, in the First Round.
  • The RedHawks are returning the reigning CCAC Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-CCAC performer Tiara Jackson (12.1rpg, 11.8ppg, 43 blks).
SCOUTING THE TROLLS
  • Trinity Christian will be led by interim head coach Dominique Nelson this season.
  • TCC finished 10-18 (7-13 CCAC) for a ninth-place finish in the conference a season ago.
  • The Trolls had no one named to the 2022-23 CCAC All-Conference last year.
  • The team's second leading scorer last year Destiny Goodwin (Sr.) returns to the roster this year.
  • Five freshmen will join the roster heading into the 2023-24 season for the Trolls.
