Northwestern Maintains Pace in GPAC Race with Win Over Hastings

Kaltenberger moves into top-10 for single-season goals

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – For the first time since 2012, the Northwestern men's soccer team (11-3-2, 7-1-2 GPAC) defeated Hastings (5-8-4, 4-3-3 GPAC) in a 2-0 shutout at the NWC Soccer Complex.

In a close, physical battle, the Northwestern defense continued its dominant trend, while opportunistic offense kept them in control.

"It has been a long time since we've beaten Hastings," said head coach Dan Swier. "The guys showed a lot of mental fortitude to rewrite the script. The opening goal was huge; we were outplaying them and deserved to take the lead as two freshmen linked up to score the match-winner."

Late in the first half, Bongkefon Kumla (Fr, Falkensee, Germany) shook his defender on the right side and played a cross to Francisco Quiroga (Fr., Santiago, Chile), who scored his second-career goal and put Northwestern ahead 1-0 at the break.

The lone goal in the second half belonged to Tim Kaltenberger (Sr., Cologne, Germany) converting on a penalty kick for his 12th goal of the year. The PK was set up when Alejandro Ruiz-Garcia (Jr., Valencia, Spain) got ahead of the play and was dragged down, causing a Hastings red card and the Kaltenberger goal.

"The shutout was also a big achievement today," Swier noted. "I am very proud of these young men."w
