Red Raiders Battle to 2-2 Draw at Dordt

A pair of second half Red Raider goals leads to first draw of season

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – A pair of second half goals for the Red Raiders saw the Battle of Sioux County end in a 2-2 draw at the Dordt Soccer Complex Wednesday night, as the Northwestern College women's soccer team (4-9-1, 2-6-1 GPAC) played to their first draw of the season.
"Dordt caught us on our heels in the first half. At halftime we talked about needing to really buckle down and play smarter to win the second half, noted head coach Kelli Herman. "We worked to get behind the ball, counter and capitalize on opportunities given to us. We were fortunate enough to put two of those opportunities in the back of the net. I am super proud of the effort and resilience the ladies had tonight."

It didn't take long for Dordt to score in the match, netting the first goal of the contest within the first minute of play. Joslyn Terpstra recorded her ninth goal for the Defenders to take the 1-0 early lead.

Midway through the first half in the 28th minute, the Defenders added their second – and final – goal of the match when the defending Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Offensive Player of the Week Karinna Tel found the back of the net for the 13th time this season.

Despite trailing 2-0 at the half, the Red Raiders showed a ton of resilience in the second half. That resilience began to show fruit in the 58th minute when Taylor Brennan (So., The Woodlands, Texas) found the back of the net, with Julie Dunlap (Sr., Des Moines, Iowa) picking up her team-leading fourth assist.

With under five minutes left on the clock, Grace Timm (Fr., Center City, Minn.) would net the equalizer for her second goal of the season, as Northwestern drew even with Dordt.

The Red Raider defense surrendered just two goals in the match, despite Dordt putting up 29 shots (14 on-goal).

MATCH NOTES
  • The Defenders held the shot advantage in the match (29-13).
  • Nine of the 13 shots were on-goal.
  • Both Taylor Brennan and Grace Timm recorded their second goals of the season in the second half.
  • Julie Dunlap recorded her team-high fourth assist in the Brennan goal (58th minute).
  • Her four assists just one assist outside the top-5 in the GPAC, sitting in a six-way tie for seventh.
  • Abby Bastian tallied 12 saves in the draw.
  • She now has 99 saves on the season, which leads the GPAC after tonight.
Up Next: Northwestern will have Saturday off and will take to the pitch again on Wednesday, October 18 when they travel to Forest City, Iowa for the first-ever GPAC matchup with the Waldorf Warriors (0-8-3, 0-6-2 GPAC).
