Northwestern Completes Weekend Sweep with Win Over Hastings

Sterk compiles his 12th-career double-double, Raiders 6-0 at home

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – Dillon Carlson led all scorers in his return to the lineup on Saturday as Northwestern (12-4, 5-3) took down Hastings (12-5, 5-4) on their home court, 74-63.

It was another night of containing one of the top scorers in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) for the Red Raiders, as Hastings' Reggie Thomas came into the game as the second-highest scorer in the league, but the Northwestern defense limited the Broncos to just 35% shooting from the field.

Northwestern held a narrow lead through the opening part of the first half, going up by as many as seven points on a pair of threes from Carlson (Sr., Ankeny, Iowa) and Conner Geddes (So., Sioux Falls, S.D.). The Broncos, however, controlled the latter part of the first half after Reggie Thomas tied the game at 20-20 as part of a 14-2 run over four and a half minutes of play.

Hastings entered the half with a four-point lead, meaning Northwestern would have to overcome another deficit in the second.

The Raiders came out of the gates quickly as Carlson opened the half with a layup followed by a three from Craig Sterk (Jr., McBain, Mich.). It was a back-and-forth affair until, at around the nine-minute point, Keyton Moser (Jr., Hull, Iowa) made a series of crucial plays on defense and had a 5-0 run of his own on offense to put Northwestern up 55-47.

Slowly expanding the gap into the final minutes of the game, Sterk threw down a dunk to give the Raiders their largest lead of the game at 70-59 before Northwestern sealed the win on defensive stops and consistent shooting at the line.

"Hastings is a physical ball club," remarked head coach Kris Korver. They make you work hard on each possession. It was a 40-minute battle. Our guys put together an excellent second half to get the job done."
