Northwestern Starts 2023 With Win Over Jamestown

Emilee Danner records her first-career double-double

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – Experimenting with a different starting line-up for the first time this season, the No. 15-ranked Northwestern College women's basketball team (10-3 5-2 GPAC) found themselves back in the win column with a 72-51 win over the University of Jamestown (12-3, 7-2 GPAC), making it nine-straight wins over the Jimmies inside the Bultman Center.
Jamestown jumped out to an early four-point lead in the opening quarter, but Northwestern was able to counter and eventually took their first lead at 12-10 thanks to a pair of free throws from Hannah Nerem (Sr., Edgerton, Minn.) with two minutes left in the opening quarter. The Raiders would themselves lead by four at the end of the quarter, 16-12.

NWC would lead most of the second quarter but a three-pointer from Kia Tower knotted the game up at 22-22 with five minutes left in the half. Northwestern would respond with a 10-0 run of their own, led by four points from Molly Schany (Jr., Emmetsburg, Iowa). Northwestern would take a 32-25 lead into the locker room at the break. Though tied for the team lead in scoring, Maddie Jones (Sr., Twin Lakes, Iowa) didn't record her first points until under three minutes in the second quarter, rather dishing out assists all half.

The third quarter would be the best scoring quarter for the Raiders of the night, putting up 21 points to extend their lead. Emilee Danner (Sr., Westside, Iowa) would put the Raiders up by 14 at 50-36 with a steal and fast break lay-up with just under two minutes left in the quarter, the largest NWC lead at the time. As time expired in the quarter, Lexie Van Kekerix (So., Rock Valley, Iowa) hit a deep three from the top of the key off the inbound pass to solidify the NWC lead.

The fourth quarter was more of the same, as Northwestern continued to push up their lead and both teams emptied the bench for the latter half of the frame. The Raiders would lead by as much as 20 points three times, and a lay-up from freshman Ashtyn Wobig (Fr., Canova, S.D.) with under a minute left would give NWC their largest lead of the game at 21 and be Wobig's first-career collegiate points. Northwestern would end up prevailing 72-51 over the Jimmies in front of the home crowd.
