Red Raiders Fall in Heartbreaker at (RV) Jamestown

Maddie Jones sets new career-high with nine assists

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – The No. 20-ranked Northwestern College women's basketball team (15-5, 10-4 GPAC) faced their second-straight tough road game, battling the Jimmies of the University of Jamestown (16-5, 11-4 GPAC), falling 70-67 inside Harold Newman Arena. Maddie Jones tallies new career-high with nine assists in the effort.

Both offenses got off to fast starts today, but it would be Northwestern that outpaced the Jimmies early. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Emilee Danner (Sr., Westside, Iowa) and Jones (Sr., Twin Lakes, Iowa) built up a 17-11 lead, forcing Jamestown to use an early time out with just under four minutes left in the first quarter. Solid defensive efforts limited the scoring the rest of the quarter, but it would be Danner who hit another three, and one from Taylor VanderVelde (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.), helped keep the advantage in favor of the Red Raiders.

NWC put up 25 points in the first quarter, led by eight points from Danner. The Raider defense held the home squad to just 41.6% shooting from the floor, while shooting 55.6% themselves. The Red Raiders also hit five three-pointers, shooting 55.6% (5-for-9) from downtown.

In the second quarter, the Raiders built up a nine-point lead but turnovers allowed for Jamestown to cut the lead down to 31-26. The two teams would continue to trade buckets, but a UJ three late in the half would cut the Red Raider lead to four (38-34), as Rotert would call a time out to settle the troops. Northwestern would take a seven-point 43-36 lead into the halftime break, thanks for 51.6% shooting and 43.8% from deep in the first half. Jones led all scorers with 10 first half points.

Back-to-back 3-pointers for Jamestown quickly cut the Raider lead to three at 45-42 early in the second half. For four-plus minutes of game time, it remained a three-point Northwestern lead at 52-49, as both offenses struggled to put the ball in the hoop. As the third quarter came to an end, Hali Anderson (So., Saint Ansgar, Iowa) pushed it back to a two-possession lead for Northwestern with a three of her own, but Jamestown would immediately hit a three on their next possession.

With Anderson's three, Jones hit her career-high eight assists for the fourth time this season, primed to set a new career-high in the final 10 minutes of play. The final bucket of the third quarter from Molly Schany (Jr., Emmetsburg, Iowa), gave Jones her new career-high mark in just three quarters of play at nine assists. Northwestern would lead by five at 57-52 at the end of the quarter.

Jamestown cut the lead down to just one in the fourth quarter 57-56, but Hannah Nerem (Sr., Edgerton, Minn.) went down on the other end of the floor to respond, getting an and-one opportunity. A Hannah DeMars 3-pointer tied the game up at 59-59, but, again, the Raiders responded with a 3-pointer of their own from freshman Kylie Foss (Brandon, S.D.). Off an ensuing Jimmie turnover, Jones would end up at the free throw line to give Northwestern yet another two-possession lead (63-59).

With under five minutes to play, a turnover and fast break lay-up for Jamestown knotted the game up at 63-63. Once again, Jones would be fouled driving to the basket putting her back on the free throw line, where she would hit both to give NWC the lead back. Jamestown would take their first lead of the game since the first quarter with a three from Hannah DeMars, 66-65. VanderVelde would tie the game up again at the free throw line as the game would be tied up heading into the final minute of play.

A missed shot from Jamestown and a foul on the rebound put Foss on the free throw line with 35 seconds to play. She would go 1-of-2 to give Northwestern the one-point lead late. Jamestown would get fouled on a shot and Kia Tower would give the Jimmies the lead with 24 seconds left, 68-67. Rotert would take a time out to set up a play with the shot clock off, but the Raiders couldn't get a shot to fall as the Jimmies would prevail 70-67.
