No. 15 Red Raiders Take on No. 21 Briar Cliff and Concordia

Briar Cliff game will mark the third ranked clash of the season for NWC

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The No. 15-ranked Northwestern College women's basketball team (14-3, 9-2 GPAC) look to hit the road for a top-25 clash with No. 21 Briar Cliff on Wednesday, before turning to host a tough Concordia (Neb.) squad on Saturday.

THE SHOOTAROUND
  • NAIA TOP-20: free throw percentage (2nd), FG% (6th), and Assists/Game (T12th).
  • The Raiders held their 12th opponent of the season to under 40% shooting from the floor, improving to 12-0 in those games.
  • The 33-point win over Midland on Saturday was the third time this season NWC has had a 30+ point win, two of those coming against the Warriors.
  • Northwestern has shot 50% or better from the floor in SIX games this season.
  • Payton Beckman set a new career-high with 12 points in the win, shooting 5-for-7 from the floor.
  • Northwestern leads the GPAC in free throw percentage (78.7) and sits second in field goal percentage (47.2), opponents FG% (36.5), and blocks per game (3.2).
  • Three Raiders sit averaging double figures still this season entering the 2023 calendar year: Molly Schany (14.3), Maddie Jones (13.3), and Emilee Danner (10.1).
IN GOOD COMPANY
  • 236 NAIA schools sponsor women's basketball…NWC sits top-45 in seven different statistical categories.
  • The Raiders are top-5 in free throw percentage and top-10 in field goal percentage.
  • NWC is top-35 in 3-point percentage and rebounding margin this season.
MAKING THE FREE THROWS COUNT
  • Three Red Raiders are shooting 80+% from the free throw line this season (min. 25 att.).
  • NWC sits second in the NAIA in free throw percentage (78.7%), which also leads the GPAC.
  • Taylor VanderVelde leads the way at 90.6% (29-for-32).
  • Maddie Jones has attempted the most on the team, shooting at a clip of 83.5% (76-for-91).
TOP-LEVEL TEAM DEFENSE
  • NWC holds opponents to a mere 36.5% field goal percentage and 58.9 points per game, which sits second in the GPAC in both categories.
  • 12 times this season, NWC has held opponents to sub-40% shooting from the floor and are a perfect 12-0 in those games.
SERIES HISTORY – BRIAR CLIFF
  • Meeting for the second time this season, the Red Raiders pulled off a second half comeback to down the Chargers inside the Bultman Center back on November 30.
  • The Raiders and Chargers are meeting for the 92nd time in the all-time series; NWC leads the series 56-35.
  • Head coach Kristin Rotert is perfect against BCU (4-0).
SERIES HISTORY – CONCORDIA (NEB.)
  • NWC picked up their first win over Concordia in Seward, Neb. in 11 years in the first meeting this season (72-56).
  • It marks the 65th all-time meeting between the two teams, NWC improving the overall record to 23-41 in favor Concordia back in early December.
  • Rotert holds a 2-1 mark against the Bulldogs in her career.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS
  • Briar Cliff gave the No. 3-ranked Dordt Defenders a run for their money before falling 87-77 last time out; falling to 13-5 (9-3 GPAC) on the season.
  • They enter the game ranked No. 21 in the NAIA and Wednesday marks the second-straight top-25 clash – and their sixth top-25 opponent of the season (1-4).
  • Their only win over a ranked opponent game in a 65-48 road win over then No. 21-ranked Dakota Wesleyan.
  • Leading scorer Konnor Sudmann sits second in the GPAC in scoring with her 19.2 points per game.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
  • Last week, CUNE took down the College of Saint Mary (74-54) before falling to Jamestown up in North Dakota (79-72), which broke a six-game GPAC win streak for head coach Drew Olson and squad.
  • The Bulldogs enter the week at 10-7 and an 8-5 mark in league play.
  • Concordia is no stranger to top-25 teams this season, playing five ranked teams in the fourth regular season poll (Jan. 11).
  • Taysha Rushton continues to lead the Bulldogs in scoring with her 13.9 points per game and is on track for 200 career 3-pointers (180 entering the week).
Up Next: Northwestern will be on the road all of next week, starting with back-to-back midweek trips to Sioux City with a clash against Morningside on Jan. 25 and a trip up to Jamestown on Saturday on Jan. 28.
