Northwestern Continues GPAC Slate with Briar Cliff and Concordia

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The (RV) Northwestern men's basketball team (14-4, 7-3 GPAC) will look to continue their winning ways as they face Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) opponents Briar Cliff (9-9, 3-8 GPAC) and Concordia (11-7, 7-5).

LAST TIME OUT:
  • The Raiders had three 20-point scorers in their 87-66 home win over Midland on Saturday.
  • Craig Sterk (Jr., McBain, Mich.) recorded his 15th-career double-double and third straight, posting 20 points and 12 rebounds.
  • Dillon Carlson (Sr., Ankeny, Iowa) had a career-high six assists to go with 24 points and seven boards.
  • Matt Onken (R-Jr., Marshall, Minn.) blocked a career-high three shots, also scoring 23 points.
  • Sterk is now tied for fourth all-time in career double-doubles, matching Nathan Wedel (2015-18).
  • Northwestern had a season-high seven blocks as a team.
NORTHWESTERN NOTES:
  • Northwestern's winning streak now sits at seven games, the longest trend in the GPAC.
  • Sterk now sits 24th in program history in career points, moving to 1,380 points as a Raider.
  • Carlson is one game away from his 10th game of 20+ points this season, including three consecutive.
THE SERIES:
  • The Raiders and Chargers match up for the second time this season.
  • It took an 18-point comeback from Northwestern to pick up a 64-58 win in the Bultman Center on November 30, 2022.
  • In the last meeting, Keyton Moser (Jr., Hull, Iowa) scored a career-high 10 points, Matt Onken tied a career-high in rebounds with 15, and Dillon Carlson led all scorers with 17.
  • Northwestern holds a 67-54 series lead against Briar Cliff, winning six of the last eight matchups.
  • After falling to Concordia (Neb.) 81-55 on December 3, 2022, the Raiders will match up with the Bulldogs once again.
  • Northwestern holds a 53-28 advantage in the all-time series.
  • Although Northwestern won at home last season, Concordia has won seven of the last eight against the Raiders.
  • In their last meeting, Craig Sterk led all scorers with 18 points, also adding five rebounds and four blocks.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
  • Dillon Carlson earned GPAC Player of the Week honors after his performance last week.
  • The senior averaged 23.0 points per game and helped Northwestern to a 2-0 week.
  • In addition to his scoring output, Carlson dished out a career-high six assists against Midland, while also notching a season-high seven rebounds.
  • He has scored 20+ points in four of the last five outings.

SCOUTING THE CHARGERS:
  • Mark Svagera is in his sixth season at the helm, having coached the Chargers to two NAIA tournament appearances.
  • The Chargers can create turnovers defensively, sitting second in the GPAC in steals per game (7.1).
  • Jaden Kleinhesselink leads the team in scoring at 13.2 points per game.
  • The guard from Sheldon, Iowa has two 30-point games this year.
  • Briar Cliff has won just one of their last four games.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS:
  • Concordia is first in the GPAC in scoring defense (68.7), first in defensive efficiency (.948), and second in opponent field goal percentage (42.1%).
  • Three active Bulldogs are averaging double-figures in scoring – Noah Schutte (17.6), Gage Smith (12.9), and Brad Bennett (10.2). Tristan Smith, who has been sidelined due to injury, scores 14.3 points per game.
  • Previously ranking as high as No. 19 in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Coaches' Poll, Concordia has lost three of their last four entering the week.
