Raiders Achieve 21 Top-Five Finishes in Season Opener

Kalvelage Betters his NAIA Auto Mark, now 4th in the NAIA

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – The Northwestern men's track and field team started 2023 on a solid note. Many of the athletes picked up where they left off the year prior and continued to excel.

The meet started with Coltin Vargas jumping a college PR of 1.86m, 6'1.25", to gain second place. Elijah Weaver and Drew Geetings both achieving 1.81m, 5'11.25", for 3rd and 4th place respectively. The long jump saw Braden Kalvelage take first place, bettering his NAIA Auto-Qualifying to 7.72m or 23'10.25". Will Bunn and Weaver took 4th and 5th, reespectively

The throws ring did not disappoint as William Minnick, Heydon Strope, and Garrick Davis, threw for 2nd, 3rd, and 5th place in the shot put. Minnick and Junior Joe Callahan went on to throw the 35lb weight to a 4th and 5th place finish.

Not to be outdone by the field events, those on the track stepped up for the challenge. The 60m dash saw three Raiders make the finals: Braden Kalvelage, Reece Wynne, and Braden Jahn. In the finals Kalvelage took second, while Wynne reeled in 5th. In the 200, Kalvelage decided to run a PR time and win the 200 in 22.54. Following very close behind, and coming off an achilles injury, was senior Cody Post to finish 3rd. The 400m sprint race saw Jahn back from his 60m finals, run a PR 52.02 and secure 3rd place as the fastest Raider over that distance for the day. The last sprint race of the competition, the 60m hurdles, had Weaver back again in 4th, and AJ Bomgaars joining right behind in 5th. Both in PR times.

Trey Engelmann and Tommy Tracy, pushed each other hard in the 800m run, leading them to a 1st and 2nd place. That would end up being an indoor 800m PR for Engelmann, as well as beating his opening 800 time last year by nearly 3 seconds. Freshman Jacob Kalkwarf would feed off of that same energy and secure 5th place. The final top-5 finish of the day came from the 4x400m team of Pryor, Ashley, Engelmann, and Vargas, securing 3rd.
