Northwestern Looks to Keep Momentum Going This Week

Raiders play at Mount Marty on Wednesday and host Midland on Saturday

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The No. 15-ranked Northwestern College women's basketball team (12-3, 7-2 GPAC) look to keep the momentum going this week when they travel to Yankton, S.D. on Wednesday to battle Mount Marty and play host to the Midland Warriors on Saturday.

THE SHOOTAROUND
  • NAIA TOP-20: free throw percentage (2nd), FG% (6th), and Assists/Game (18th).
  • NWC erupted for eight blocks in the two wins this past weekend. Both Molly Schany and Maren Nerem recorded two against Hastings on Saturday.
  • Freshman Ashtyn Wobig recorded her first-career points (3) with a field goal and a free throw, in the 72-51 win over Jamestown.
  • Seeing her first substantial minutes (23.5/game), sophomore Lexie Van Kekerix set a new career-high in each game, now sitting at nine points (vs. Hastings).
  • Payton Beckman was a spark plug against the Broncos, hitting a new career-high three 3-pointers, having nine points in the win.
  • Northwestern leads the GPAC in free throw percentage (78.9) and sits second in field goal percentage (46.7).
  • Three Raiders sit averaging double figures still this season entering the 2023 calendar year: Maddie Jones (14.2), Molly Schany (14.2), and Emilee Danner (10.0).
  • Danner continues to lead the GPAC in blocks (22) and blocks per game (1.5), after recording her 100th career block in the game against Dakota State on December 20.
HOT FROM DEEP
  • The Raiders are shooting at a clip of 34.5% (77-for-223) from deep this season, continuing to sit fourth in the GPAC entering the week.
  • NWC has a season-high of nine made 3-pointers in the win over Hastings on Jan. 7.
  • When Northwestern shoots 30+% from 3-point range this season, they hold an 9-3 record.
  • Taylor VanderVelde and her 38.7% mark leads the team (min. 25).
MAKING THE FREE THROWS COUNT
  • Three Red Raiders are shooting 80+% from the free throw line this season (min. 25 att.).
  • NWC sits second in the NAIA in free throw percentage (78.9%), which also leads the GPAC.
  • Taylor VanderVelde leads the way at 89.3% (25-for-28).
  • Maddie Jones has attempted the most on the team, shooting at a clip of 82.4% (70-for-85).
HIGH-LOW ATTACK DUO
  • Maddie Jones and Molly Schany are a high-powered duo in the Red Raider offense, making it a fun high-low offensive attack.
  • Both are averaging 14.2 points per game this season, marking two of the three averaging double digits.
  • Schany also leads the team in rebounding (7.2rpg), while Jones paces the team in assists (4.7apg).
SERIES HISTORY – MOUNT MARTY
  • NWC and Mount Marty are meeting for the first time this season, as NWC won last time out 63-52 in Orange City last season.
  • The two teams meet for the 81st time on Wednesday, as Northwestern leads the all-time series 58-22.
  • The Raiders have won four-straight games in the series.
  • Head coach Kristin Rotert is 2-0 against the Lancers in her time in Orange City.
SERIES HISTORY – MIDLAND
  • Saturday marks the second regular season meeting between NWC and Midland, as NWC put up 100 points in the meeting in Fremont, Neb. back in November (107-71).
  • NWC leads the all-time series 42-16, as Saturday marks the 59th all-time meeting.
  • Northwestern has won five-straight games in the series, dating back to the 2020-21 season. Their last lost came on Nov. 21, 2020 (80-74) in Orange City, while the Raiders have won 29 of the last 31 meetings dating back to Feb. 11, 2006.
  • Rotert is 3-0 against the Warriors in her NWC tenure.
SCOUTING THE LANCERS
  • Mount Marty enters the game 5-12 (2-9 GPAC), already surpassing the amount of conference wins they had last year at the halfway point of this season under first-year head coach Allan Bertram.
  • The Lancers are coming off a 72-60 road win at the College of Saint Mary on Saturday, their first GPAC road win since the 2019-20 season, that win also at CSM.
  • Senior Eve Millar leads the team in both scoring (10.5) and rebounding (6.9).
SCOUTING THE WARRIORS
  • Midland enters the week in the midst of a three-game losing streak, their last win coming back on December 14, 2022 against CSM (69-57). It marks their only league win of the season.
  • Last time out, the Warriors fell to Morningside in Fremont 73-51.
  • Two Warriors average double digits per game in Erin Prusa (11.4) and Emma Shepard (10.3).
Up Next: Northwestern will split next week as well, traveling to No. 22-ranked Briar Cliff on Wednesday and hosting Concordia (Neb.) on Saturday, both marking the second regular season meetings between the two teams.
