No. 8 Raiders End Labor Day Classic Unbeaten

Northwestern sweeps No. 4-ranked Park (Mo.) in the top-10 match of the weekend

NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. – The No. 8-ranked Northwestern College women's volleyball team (9-1, 1-0 GPAC) wraps up their final tournament of the regular season with a perfect record, as the Raiders went 2-0 on Day 2 of the Labor Day Classic.

Northwestern opened the day with a straight sets victory over No. 4-ranked Park (Mo.) (25-19, 25-13, 25-23) and taking down the University of Saint Mary (Kan.) in four sets (24-26, 26-24, 25-14, 25-22).

"It was a great team win over a great team. We had a great morning of serving the ball, digging and timely blocks!" noted head coach Kyle Van Den Bosch. "Our attackers hit smart and kept Park guessing where we were going. Both Jadeyn and Liv set smart locations."

MATCH 1: (8) NWC 3, (4) Park 0

Northwestern held a high-powered Park (Mo.) offense to a mere .118 hitting percentage in a match that went the Red Raiders way in straight sets. NWC used 10 team blocks and five service aces to take control over the defending National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) runners-up.

De Haan led the first set with her seven kills on 12 attempts in the opening set. Another set of runs, Northwestern led 20-19 when they rattled off the final five points to secure the 25-19 first set victory.

Set two saw more Northwestern runs, jumping out to an early 6-1 lead thanks to multiple kills from Alysen Dexter (So., Urbandale, Iowa) and Bekah Horstman (Sr., Pella, Iowa). A four-point swing for the Raiders gave them a 17-9 advantage, as they would go on to close it out 25-13. The Raiders hit their best clip of the match with a .406 percentage to take the commanding 2-0 match lead.

The third set was the closest of the three, as both teams eclipsed the 20-point mark as Park was looking to avoid the sweep in the top-10 matchup. Trailing 22-21, Northwestern rattled off four of the next five points to secure the sweep of the No. 4-ranked team in the NAIA. Jazlin De Haan (So., Orange City, Iowa) continued to swing hot, notching five of the Raiders 14 kills in the set.

MATCH NOTES
  • NWC hit .279 with 44 kills on the match, more than doubling Park who had 19 kills (.118 clip).
  • Jazlin De Haan hit a stellar .414 with a match-high 14 kills to garner Scooter's Player of the Game honors.
  • Three Raiders notch double-digit kills: De Haan (14), Alysen Dexter (11), Bekah Horstman (10).
  • Olivia Granstra notched 23 digs on the match from her libero slot.
  • Setting duties were split by Liv Reitsma (19) and Jadeyn Schutt (14).
MATCH 2: (8) NWC 3, Saint Mary 1

In the final match of the Labor Day Classic, it was a clash of two programs who both battled No. 4-ranked Park (Mo.). Park defeated Saint Mary in four sets, while the Red Raiders also get the best of the Spires in four sets. Once again, Northwestern notched double-digit team blocks (10) to power past the University of Saint Mary.

For only the second time this season the Raiders dropped the opening set of a match, falling in an extra-point battle 26-24. Both teams struggled to swing in the first set, but the Red Raiders would quickly correct that for the rest of the match.

The Raider attack woke up fully in the third set as the Raiders hit a lights out .593 with 17 kills in the 25-14 set victory to take the 2-1 match lead. De Haan recorded nine of those kills, including a span of five-straight kills coming from the sophomore to secure the pivotal set.

The final set again saw both teams hit the 20-point mark in the fourth set, but it was NWC who prevailed 25-22 to take the match 3-1.

MATCH NOTES
  • NWC had 61 kills on the night, the second-most kills on the season. The Raiders notched 62 kills against Rocky Mountain last night.
  • The Raiders notched seven service aces, as they still lead the GPAC in the category.
  • Jazlin De Haan sets a new Raider career-high with 17 kills.
  • Alysen Dexter also notched 17 kills, her second most at the Labor Day Classic this weekend.
  • The setting duties continued to be split as both Jadeyn Schutt (25) and Liv Reitsma (23) both notched 20+ assists.
  • Granstra tallied 25 digs, her fourth 20+ digs match of the season and third-consecutive.
