Block Party Leads to Sweep of No. 9 Viterbo in Top-10 Match

Bekah Horstman notches 1,000th career kill; 19th Raider to join the club

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The No. 7-ranked Northwestern College volleyball team (12-4, 3-3 GPAC) ends their three-match homestand with a straight sets victory over No. 9-ranked Viterbo University (Wis.) (13-6, 3-0 NSAA) in a non-conference clash between top-10 teams inside the Bultman Center Tuesday night.

"That was a very good team win against a top-10 team," noted head coach Kyle Van Den Bosch. "I thought our block and defense got into their hitters early and often which forced them to make a lot of hitting errors."

Senior Bekah Horstman (Sr., Pella, Iowa) once again etched her name in the Red Raider volleyball program record book. With her seventh kill in the third set, Horstman notched her 1,000th career kill becoming the 19th Raider to join the 1,000-kill club. She joins a more exclusive club being just the second Red Raider to notch 1,000+ kills and 500+ blocks in their career, joining Randa (Hulstein) Poel.

"What a great accomplishment for Bekah to get 1,000 kills and 500 block in a career," said Van Den Bosch. "She has been a steady performer for us throughout her career."

Northwestern came ready to defend the home court tonight, handedly taking the first set 25-14. Early on, the Raider defense came to play, holding the V-Hawks to a -0.171 hitting percentage with six team blocks in the first set alone. Only eight team kills for the Red Raiders (21 swings) as Viterbo had 14 errors in the set.

The second set saw Viterbo show some fight. After going back and fourth most of the set, Viterbo held a 20-18 advantage. The Raiders used a six-point run to take it to set point (24-20) thanks to five V-Hawk attack errors, but the visiting squad would still have something to say. Rallying all the way back to tie it at 24-24, Northwestern would take the next two points by way of a service error and a set-securing kill by Jazlin De Haan (So., Orange City, Iowa).

Northwestern would use that new-found momentum to take a quick 10-1 advantage. Another run, another six-straight, made it 17-4 and the match looked well in hand. However, yet again, the V-Hawks would show some late life and try their best to claw back into it. A 13-5 push brought the score to 22-17. Van Den Bosch would take a time out to settle his team down, which would work wonders as NWC rattled off the final three points needed to take the set 35-17 and the match (3-0).

"Our offense really clicked tonight as I thought we played pretty fast and aggressive all night long," concluded Van Den Bosch. "Jaz, Alysen, and Bekah were very tough to stop for Viterbo."

MATCH NOTES:
  • All three victories against Viterbo in the all-time series (3-5) have been sweeps.
