No. 7 NWC Falls in Four Sets to Top-Ranked Midland

Three Raiders notch double-digit kills

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The No. 7-ranked Northwestern College volleyball team (11-4, 3-3 GPAC) battled top-ranked Midland (15-2, 5-1 GPAC) inside the Bultman Center on Saturday evening, falling in four hard-fought sets (23-25, 20-25, 25-22, 23-25). Three Raiders notched double-digit kills in the effort.

Both teams hit a blistering .300+ in the opening set inside the Bultman Center. A hard-fought set would eventually go the way of the Warriors, after a 5-1 spurt for Midland (trailing 21-19), would make it 24-22 and a kill from their team-high leader Taliyah Flores would give the top-ranked squad the 25-23 opening set victory.

The second set continued to see Flores and Northwestern's Jazlin De Haan (So., Orange City, Iowa) battle it out at the net, as they were the first two to reach double-digit kills by the end of the second set. Trailing 13-8, the Raiders would go on a furious tear of a 7-2 run to tie the match up at 15-15, but three-straight points for the Warriors would give them back the momentum. Despite the effort, Midland would end the set on a 6-2 run to take the set 25-20 and go up 2-0 in the match.

The Red Raiders would fight and claw in the third set, taking it 25-22 to force a fourth set. Despite being down 5-2 early, an 8-2 Raider run would give them their first lead of the set (12-11). The two teams would go back and forth until Midland held a slim one-point advantage (19-18) before NWC tore off five-straight points to go up 23-19. Midland would battle, but an Alysen Dexter (So., Urbandale, Iowa) would give Northwestern the 25-22 set win.

The fourth set proved to be a defensive battle, as both teams hit under .200 on the set. Midland jumped out to an 8-2 lead but NWC would respond with five-straight of their own to cut that lead to 8-7. The Warriors would use a 6-0 run in the middle of the set (17-11), though the Raiders would battle back to make it 20-17. Trailing 24-19, a furious four-point Raider run would bring them to within 25-23 but a Flores kill would give Midland the 25-23 and a 3-1 match victory.

MATCH NOTES:
  • Sophomore Jazlin De Haan led all attackers with 19 kills on 50 swings (.220), while notching 14 digs.
  • Bekah Horstman (14) and Alysen Dexter (12) also notched double-digit kills.
