Raiders Show Strong Defensive Effort Against Undefeated Bulldogs

SEWARD, Neb.  – The Northwestern (4-5-1, 0-3-1 GPAC) used a strong defensive outing to stop Concordia (Neb.) (6-0-2, 1-0-2 GPAC) from scoring on Saturday afternoon, with the contest ending in a scoreless draw.

The Bulldogs were outscoring opponents 21-5 so far this season, but the Raiders kept Concordia off the board for a full 90 minutes, led by their starting back line of Grace Najera (Henderson, Nev.), Emily Schmidt (Bellevue, Neb.), Emily Vanderark (Byron Center, Mich.), and Keslie Paul (Frisco, Texas), with Kaelin Alons (Orange City, Iowa) in goal.

"The first half we stayed organized and limited their dangerous opportunities," said head coach Shannon Andringa. "The second half we had to scramble a bit more but the girls put everything they had out there."

The Raiders' two shots on goal came from Julie Dunlap (Des Moines, Iowa) and Alexa Johnson (Spencer, Iowa) as shot attempts were at a premium.

"Today was a physical battle and I'm really proud of the fight the girls showed," commented Andringa. "It was one of our best defensive efforts of the season."
Andringa has been impressed with her team's effort against the conference's top teams through the early part of the season.

"This is a very young group and we're learning and getting better each game."
