NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. – The No. 8-ranked Northwestern College women's volleyball team (7-1, 0-0 GPAC) had a strong showing on the first day of the 2022 Labor Day Classic, taking down two squads receiving votes in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

Northwestern began the day with a straight sets victory over (RV) Dakota State University (4-3, 0-0 NSAA) and ended the day with a four-set win over (RV) Rocky Mountain (Mont.) (4-3, 0-0 Frontier).

"It was a hard-fought day and feel like we had to go out and earn these wins," noted head coach Kyle Van Den Bosch. "It was a great team effort to earn these wins today."

MATCH 1: (8) NWC 3, (RV) Dakota State 0

The first set proved to be a battle as both teams fought neck-and-neck early on. Northwestern's defense was stout in the end, as Dakota State hit only 0.61 in the opening set. The Trojans came out on fire, taking the first four points of the match but a quick NWC rally cut the lead to 4-3. Using a five-point swing, Northwestern took their first lead of the set at 9-6. A six-point run would be what the Raiders needed to distance themselves, taking the 16-11 lead. Though Dakota State would battle back, NWC would take the set 25-23.

Northwestern used team hitting percentages north of .300 in the second and third sets, to take total control of the match after the hard fought first set. The use of blocks and the back row defense, the Red Raiders made life hard for the Trojans as they were held to an .067 and -.059 hitting percentage in the final two sets.

MATCH NOTES
  • The straight sets victory marked four-straight sweeps, including two against teams receiving votes at the time of the match.
  • Alysen Dexter (13) and Bekah Horstman (12) again notched double-digit kills.
  • Horstman was, again, on fire in the middle hitting a superb .478 (12 kills, 1 error, 23 attempts).
  • The block party continued as the Raiders had 12 blocks as a team, including eight from Bekah Horstman.
  • The Raiders had eight team service aces, led by Jadeyn Schutt and Dexter both with three.
  • Liv Reitsma and Olivia Granstra had a match-highs with 24 assists and 19 digs, respectively.
  • The Raider defense held DSU to a match hitting percentage of .027.
MATCH 2: (8) NWC 3, (RV) Rocky Mountain 1

Northwestern ran into a tough Rocky Mountain squad in the night cap, beginning about an hour after the originally scheduled 5:00 p.m. start time. Nonetheless, NWC found ways to take the 2-0 match lead thanks to 25-23 and 25-16 set victories.

Rocky Mountain would take the third set 25-21, ending the straight sets victory streak at four. Northwestern would battle back, in another hard-fought set, taking set four 25-23 to take the match 3-1. In a final set that saw neither team score more than back-to-back points most of the set, a 3-0 Raider run to make it 21-17 would give the Raiders the momentum needed to close out the set, and match.

MATCH NOTES
  • Alysen Dexter is the first Raider to notch 20+ kills in a match this season; she's the first to do so since Anna Wedel at Dordt in 2020.
  • Both Jazlin De Haan and Bekah Horstman also notch double-digit kills with 15 and 12, respectively.
  • Freshman Liv Reitsma erupted for 56 assists in the hard-fought four-set victory.
  • It marks first time a Raider notched 50+ assists since current assistant coach Lacey Reitz had 50 back in the 2020 season.
  • The Raiders notched six service aces as a team in the win.
  • Olivia Granstra led the team again with 26 digs.
  • On the day, Horstman's career kills total site at 921 and her block total sits at 479.
