NWC Battles Tigers in Sioux City

Saturday, April 9, 2022

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern College men's tennis team (8-7, 0-4 GPAC) fell to the Tigers of Doane University (7-4, 2-0 GPAC) last night, April 9, 1-6.

Head coach Monte Tilgner had this to say about the match, "I am so proud of the way the guys have battled these last couple of weeks. We played the four top teams in the conference and battled really well."

Doane swept the doubles matches and took the doubles point. Collin Harmelink (Fr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Juan Mackrey (Sr., Balcare, Argentina) lost a close match 5-7 in the No. 2 spot.

Brian VandenBerg (Jr., Mason City, Iowa) dropped a tough match in the No. 1 spot. Coach Tilgner added, "Brian played a very good match against a great player, loosing at match that was much closer than the 2-6, 4-6 final score."

The Raiders lone point came from Mackrey's win in the No. 3 singles position. Coach Tilgner commented, "Juan Mackrey played a tough, long, three set match, winning 5-7 in the final set."

Coach Tilgner concluded, "The matches were so much closer than the final scores ended up. We have to figure out how to win more deuce points and we can flip some of those individual matches and thus the team match."
