Baseball Drops Two at Midland to Begin Series

Sam Stanford improves hit streak to 13 games

FREMONT, Neb. – The Northwestern College baseball team (13-17, 5-9 GPAC) hit the baseball diamond for the first time in seven calendar days, dropping both games begin the four-game set with the Midland Warriors (20-10, 7-7 GPAC).

GAME 1: Midland 4, Northwestern 1

Pitching Decisions
Win: Jay Lambert (3-3)
Loss: Brett Shelton (3-4)
Save: Keegan Adams (7)

How It Happened
Midland began the scoring early in the contest, manufacturing a run in the first after a leadoff double down the left field line by Beau Boyle. He would later steal third, before being scored on a sacrifice fly to give Midland the early 1-0 advantage.

More small ball in the second inning led to the second Midland run, as a leadoff single would eventually come around to score on a bunt single. Midland would tack on two more runs between the third and the fourth innings, to take the 4-0 lead after four innings.

The Raiders got on the board in the fourth themselves via an RBI single from Colby Shelton (Fr., Urbandale, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) that scored Sam Stanford (So., Los Angeles, Calif./Pacifica Christian). Stanford began the inning with a double down the left field line.

Game Notes
  • Midland scored all four runs in the first three innings of the contest.
  • Both teams committed two errors apiece.
  • Sam Stanford extends his hit streak to 12 games with his RBI single, driving in the only Raider run of the day.
  • Eli Rash reaches base safely for the six-straight game for the Raiders.
  • Colby Shelton recorded his second multi-hit game of the season, the only Raider to record multiple hits in Game 1.
  • Sam Stanford tallies his 8th double of the season, pulling even with Kip Cullinan for most on the team.
  • Mo Watson also recorded a hit in the contest, also walking once.
  • Brett Shelton tossed all 6.0 innings of the day; all four Midland runs were earned. He faced 24 hitters, allowed six hits, and notched one strike out.
  • For the third time in his career, Shelton did not allow a walk in his start (minimum 4.0 IP). It's the second outing this season he has not allowed a walk, throwing 1.0 innings in relief against Hastings on March 14.
GAME 2: Midland 3, Northwestern 0

Pitching Decisions
Win: Lucas Hamzeh (5-2)
Loss: Brady Roberts (2-4)
Save: Keegan Adams (8)

How It Happened
Midland scattered three runs throughout the contest, to take Game 2 the 2-0 series lead.

The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. They added what proved to be insurance runs in the fifth and eighth innings.

Northwestern loads the bases in the ninth inning but could not punch in a run, falling 3-0.

Game Notes
  • Northwestern mustered just three hits in Game 2, striking out 13 times to Midland's sophomore right-hander.
  • Waiting until the final frame, Sam Stanford improves his hit streak to 13 games with a double to left center.
  • Ty Martens records his first double of the season, one of two extra bases for NWC in Game 2.
  • Being plunked in Game 2, Eli Rash has now reached base safely in the last seven games for the Raiders.
  • Brady Roberts threw 7.0 innings, scattering six Midland hits and allowing two earned runs. He struck out three and one of the 29 batters he faced.
  • Colton Schuchart tossed the eighth inning, allowing a run but punching out two guys in the frame. He now has 35 strike outs in his freshman campaign.
  • The freshman southpaw has a 5:1 strikeout/walk ratio in his 17.2 innings on the season. He holds a 1.50 ERA in GPAC play (6 app., 12.0 IP).
QUOTABLE
Head Coach, Brian Wede (on today's doubleheader):
"It was a rough day for us. Not a lot of action on the bases but we had chances to win both games due to our pitching giving us a chance."

STAT OF THE GAME:
13 – Sam Stanford increases his hit streak to 13, collecting a hit in both games of the doubleheader today.

Up Next: Northwestern will welcome the Warriors to Orange City on Monday, April 11, in the doubleheader that was rescheduled from Friday, to complete the four-game set. First pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m. with Game 2 to follow.
