Raiders Split with Doane to Begin Trip to Nebraska

Raiders travel to Hastings tomorrow

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern College softball team (23-7, 2-4 GPAC) traveled to Crete, Neb. to take on the Doane University softball team, splitting with the Tigers. Gwen Mikkelsen and Bri Giordano both went deep in the doubleheader.

How It Happened
Jordyn Kramer (Sr., Larchwood, Iowa) started off the scoring for the Raiders with an RBI double to left center in the top of the second. Doane would answer with two runs of their own, one in the third and one in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead.
 
On a double steal, Jennifer Boeve (Jr., Hastings, Neb.) would score to tie the game at two in the seventh inning. Madysn Grotewold (So., Larchwood, Iowa) would steal home to take a 3-2 lead after advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt. Gwen Mikkelsen (Jr., Casa Grande, Ariz.) would tack on an insurance run with a solo home run to give the Raider a 4-2 lead.
 
Game Notes
  • Northwestern used a 3-run top of the seventh to prevail over the Tigers
  • Gwen Mikkelsen belted her third home run of the season, marking her second home run of the week.
  • Jennifer Boeve had two stolen bases in the contest, bringing a perfect 3-for-3 on the year.
  • Boeve, Mikkelsen, Gallegos, Kramer all had doubles in the first game.
  • Kramer and Mikkelsen drove in a run each in the victory.
  • Kameryn Etherington tallied her eleventh win of the season, going six innings and striking out eight. She allowed seven hits and two earned runs.
  • Kate Kralik picked up her second save of the season, picking up the save with 1.0 innings pitched.

How It Happened
Bri Giordano (Jr., Arroyo Grande, Calif.) smacked an RBI single to score Etherington in the top of the second to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead. Doane responded with a run of their own in the third to tie it at one.
 
On an attempted double steal, a throwing error by the catcher allowed Giordano to score giving the Raiders a one run lead in the top of the fourth. Doane would respond with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth (2-2). A two-run RBI double added two more for the Tigers (4-2).
 
An Etherington single would pull the Raiders within one run in the top of the fifth (3-4). Giordano would hit a home run over the center field wall to score two more and give the Raider a 5-4 lead.
 
An error in the sixth would allow a Tiger runner aboard and a run to score (5-5). The winning run came way of a Tiger home run.
 
Game Notes
  • Northwestern dropped a heartbreaker in the bottom of the seventh in walk-off fashion, on a Doane home run.
  • It marks the third split in Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) play this season for the Raiders.
  • Bri Giordano hit her fourth home run of the season in game two.
  • Kameryn Etherington picked up her first triple of the season.
  • Kate Kralik tossed game two, going 3.2 innings and allowing two Tiger runs on four hits. She walked four, striking out three.
  • Etherington pitched in game two, falling to 11-3, throwing 2.1 innings in relief; allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits.
STAT OF THE GAME
10 – The Raiders had ten stolen bases on the day, three Raiders notched multiple stolen base games.
