Thursday, April 28, 2022

FORT DODGE, Iowa – The Northwestern College men's tennis team (10-8, 2-4 GPAC) wrapped up regular season play at Iowa Central Community College (6-4) falling 2-7.

Head coach Monte Tilgner stated, "We played a really good match against a very good junior college team."

Brian VandenBerg (Jr., Mason City, Iowa) and David Bomgaars (Fr., Aurora, Colo.) were able to pick up a doubles win in the No. 1 spot 8-6. Jack Roisum (So., Rapid City, S.D.) and Noah Roisum (So., Rapid City, S.D.) dropped a close match 5-8 and ICCC took two out of the three doubles points.

Tilgner commented on his team's doubles performances, "Brian and David played a great match in the No. 1 doubles position and got the win 8-6. Jack and Noah Roisum are playing better all the time and lost their doubles match 5-8."

Juan Mackrey (Sr., Balcare, Argentina) battled and took his first set 6-0. He dropped a close second set 4-6 and fell in the tiebreaker 7-10. J. Roisum won the No. 5 singles match in a long three set match. He dropped the first set 2-6 but bounced back to win 6-4 to force a third set. J. Roisum won a long third set 15-13.

Tilgner added, "In singles play Brian played against a very good player, and came up just short, losing 3-6, 4-6. Jack Roisum has been playing better recently and I was so happy to see him get a win, and especially gutting it out to win 15-13 in a third set super tiebreaker."

Up Next: The Raiders will compete in the GPAC Tennis Tournament on Friday, April 29. The men are set to face No. 3-seeded Concordia (Neb.) at approximately 1:30 p.m. in Fremont, Neb. at the YMCA-Fremont.

Coach Tilgner finished with, "Juan, Collin, and Noah all played very competitive matches those could have gone either way. This match was the perfect preparation for the conference tournament in just two days. Everyone was challenged and had to step up their game, which is exactly what we are going to have to do in the tournament.
