SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern College women's tennis team (5-10, 1-4) picked up their first Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) win of the season in impressive fashion, 6-1, over the Lancers of Mount Marty University (0-6, 0-6 GPAC).
Northwestern got off to a hot start, taking the first two doubles matches and securing the doubles point, only dropping two games total.
Julia Kutz (Fr., Sheridan, Wyo.) and
Julia Anderson (Fr., Rapid City, S.D.) got the win in the No. 1 position, 6-2.
Ainslie Robinson (Fr., Luverne, Minn.) and
Wynne Vandersall (Jr., Martelle, Iowa) secured the point with an impressive 6-0 win in the No. 2 spot. The third position ended as a win for the Raiders via a forfeit.
The Raiders carried that momentum into the singles matches. Kutz won in the No. 1 spot in two sets, 6-4, 7-5. Anderson dropped a tough three set match, 4-6, 6-4, 4-10. Vandersall continued to be perfect on the day winning 6-0, 6-0, resulting in her not dropping a game all day. Robinson carried the momentum from her doubles win into her singles play in the No. 4 position winning, 6-0, 6-1. The last two spots went Northwestern's way by way of Mount Marty forfeits.
Head coach
Jamie De Jong stated, "We've been experiencing a lot of defeat this spring and it was nice to take home a Raider win tonight. Easter break will be a lovely opportunity to take a rest before we step into our final two GPAC matches to finish off our season. College of St. Mary and Hastings will be close matches for us. We hope to finish strong."
