Raiders Bounce Back with Home Win Over Morningside

Balanced scoring and efficient shooting keys to victory

ORANGE CITY, Iowa  – On a day that saw Red Raider basketball honor players and coaches of the past, Northwestern (8-4, 3-3 GPAC) played with consistency to defeat a Morningside (9-3, 5-2 GPAC) team that was sitting at the top of the conference standings.

The game was evenly-matched through the first nine minutes, as the score was knotted up at 20 with 11:30 to play in the first half. At 10:32, a three from Conner Geddes (So., Sioux Falls, S.D.) catapulted the Raiders to a 10-2 run in two minutes of play. Northwestern pushed their lead to as many as 10 points when Craig Sterk (Jr., McBain, Mich.) threw down a thunderous dunk to get the home crowd on their feet.

After taking a 10-point lead into the break, Northwestern took their largest lead of the game, a 12-point advantage on a layup by Matt Onken (R-Jr., Marshall, Minn.). At the 14:05 mark, Morningside started to inch closer to the Raiders, starting with a three from Aidan Vanderloo to make it 55-50. The Mustangs came as close as two points with a Dylan Johnson three moments later. However, Northwestern held off any threat from Morningside, never relinquishing the lead in the second half.

Grant DeMeulenare (Sr., Altoona, Iowa) and Dillon Carlson (Sr., Ankeny, Iowa) iced the game away in the final 30 seconds, going 6-6 on their late-game free throw opportunities.

"We've been getting better," said head coach Kris Korver. "It was great to see our guys trust one another and trust the process. We have work to do but we are improving. It was great to see our guys get it done this afternoon."
