Men's Basketball Set to Host Pizza Ranch Classic

Raiders to face IU East and Viterbo on Friday and Saturday

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – After opening the 2022-23 campaign in North Dakota two weeks ago, the (RV) Northwestern men's basketball team (1-1, 0-0 GPAC) is set to play in front of their home crowd for the first time this season, hosting Indiana University East on Friday and Viterbo (Wis.) on Saturday. The 2022 Pizza Ranch Classic, held at the Bultman Center, will see the Raiders tip-off at 7:00 p.m. on Friday and 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.

LAST TIME OUT:
  • Northwestern split their two outings on Oct. 28-29, falling to Valley City State (N.D.) 91-83 and defeating Mayville State (N.D.) 79-75.
  • Alex Van Kalsbeek (Jr., Orange City, Iowa) secured two double-doubles in points and rebounds on the weekend.
  • In his first games as a Red Raider, Dillon Carlson (Sr., Ankeny, Iowa) scored 16 and 17 points.
  • The Raiders used a comeback effort in October 29's win over Mayville State after trailing by 18 at halftime.
HONOR ROLL:
  • Van Kalsbeek (3rd) and guard Trent Hilbrands (HM) both received NAIA All-American honors in 2021-22.
  • Head Coach Kris Korver won his 500th career game in the 2021-22 season in a 98-70 victory over Mount Marty on February 12, 2022.
  • Korver is currently the seventh winningest coach among active NAIA head coaches.
POLL PARTY:
  • Northwestern opens the season receiving votes in the NAIA preseason Top-25. The Raiders are among four GPAC teams represented in the poll, with Jamestown at No. 9, Briar Cliff at No. 24, and Concordia (Neb.) receiving votes.
  • The Red Raiders were picked to finish third in this year's GPAC preseason poll after finishing third in the conference standings a year ago.
  • IU East picked up 116 votes for fourth-place in the River States Conference (RSC) Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • Viterbo was picked to finish third in the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA), receiving one first-place vote, after earning a share of the regular season conference title last season.
SCOUTING THE RED WOLVES:
  • The Red Wolves finished 16-15 last season, falling in the RSC semifinals to IU Kokomo.
  • IU East was picked to finish fourth in the RSC preseason coaches' poll.
  • Mark Hester's squad will look to replace last season's two All-Conference performers in Garrett Silcott and Jehu Lafeuillee.
SCOUTING THE V-HAWKS:
  • The V-Hawks have started 3-0 for only the second time since the 2011-12 season. They also started 3-0 last year.
  • Viterbo was picked to finish fourth in the NSAA. The Raiders are 1-1 against North Star opponents this season.
  • Head coach Wayne Wagner is the reigning NSAA Coach of the Year after leading his team to their first-ever share of the regular season conference title.
  • Jack Monis returns to the team after being named an Honorable Mention NAIA All-American in 2021-22.
  • Monis was selected as the NSAA Player of the Week after scoring 20 points and pulling down eight rebounds against Judson (Ill.) last week.
