Northwestern Downs DWU 3-0 for Third-Straight Win

Raiders pick up back-to-back shutout wins

MITCHELL, S.D. – The Northwestern College men's soccer team (5-4-3, 4-1-1 GPAC) erupts for three second half goals to pick up their third-straight win and fourth Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) victory of the season with a 3-0 road win over the Tigers of Dakota Wesleyan (1-9-1, 0-5-0 GPAC).

"Dakota Wesleyan is a team that battles really hard as long as they are in the game. We saw that tonight with a valiant effort by them," said head coach Dan Swier. "We needed to earn the victory and, fortunately, the guys stayed committed to the game plan in the second half and had a spell of ten minutes when it all came together."
For the second-straight match, the score at the half remained 0-0. Northwestern mustered up eight shots with five being on-goal, but could not find the back of the net. Stan van den Beld (So., Voorhout, Netherlands) and Johannes von Saldern (So., Jena, Germany) led the first half attack for the Red Raiders with a combined five shots and three being on-goal.

All three scores of the second half came within a four-minute span. Niklas Fitter (So., Sankt Augustin, Germany) initially broke the scoreless tie in the 61st minute for his team-leading seventh goal, thanks to an assist from van den Beld. In the 65th minute, van den Beld broke into the goal column on the box score with his second goal of the campaign. Finally, in the 67th minute Fitter struck again, with the assist to van den Beld, to extend the Raider lead to 3-0.

"Stan had a great second half with a hand in all three goals," noted Swier.
