Raiders Sweep Grand View; Win Fourth-Straight Match

Olivia Granstra notches a new career-high 27 digs in the win

DES MOINES, Iowa – The No. 7-ranked Northwestern College volleyball team (15-4, 5-3 GPAC) earned their fourth-straight sweep taking down Grand View University (6-14, 5-6 HAAC) 25-23, 25-17, 25-22 Tuesday evening inside the Charles S. Johnson Wellness Center, as the Red Raiders controlled the match from start to finish. Olivia Granstra sets a new career-high with 27 digs in the straight sets victory.

"Tonight was a good road win," said head coach Kyle Van Den Bosch. "I thought we played well in stretches but really good to start each set to give us a cushion each set."

The home squad gave the Raiders a run for their money in the opening set, though the Raiders kept them at arm's length early in the set. Leading 11-7, the Raiders found themselves looking to stop a 7-1 swing and regain momentum. Later, Grand View would lead 21-18 when three straight errors got the Raiders back into it. Senior Bekah Horstman (Sr., Pella, Iowa) would take it upon her to ensure the Raiders would not drop the opening set. Ultimately, a punishing swing from Jazlin De Haan (So., Orange City, Iowa) sealed the first set for Northwestern.

"I thought Bekah was really high and really physical tonight," said Van Den Bosch. "At the end of the first set, she had two big blocks and two big kills that helped us seal that first set win."

The second set showed why Northwestern is ranked No. 7 in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The Raiders used an 8-0 run to jump out to a 10-point advantage and 14-4, as their blocking prowess came to life. Though the Vikings would look to be scrappy and fight back into it, the Raiders used a 7-4 push to close out the set 25-17.

Grand View would battle in the third – and final – set, but the high-powered Red Raider offense would get big kills when it mattered most to close out the match and pick up their fourth-consecutive sweep. Trailing 21-16, the Vikings used four-straight points to fight to within one point. But it would be Horstman, back in central Iowa, who would seal the deal in the final set, and the Raider victory.

"Granstra got a lot of digs but was very accurate with her digs which allowed us to be efficient offensively," commented Van Den Bosch.
