Del Monaco Nets Two in Season Finale Win

ORANGE CITY, Iowa  – The Red Raider men's soccer team (7-5-5, 6-2-3 GPAC) scored five goals in a final tune-up before next week's conference tournament, putting away a determined Doane (2-14-2, 2-7-2 GPAC) squad with a penalty-kick goal in the final minutes.

Northwestern got the scoring started when Joshua Wingfield (Sr., Smyrna Del.) took the ball down by the goal line and gave a pinpoint cross to Ryan Del Monaco (Fr., Tea, S.D.) for the first of his two goals. Doane tied the match later in the half, but Del Monaco answered again to give the Raiders a 2-1 lead at the 18' mark.

With the score knotted at 2-2 heading out of the break, Stan van den Beld (So., Voorhout, Netherlands) drew a penalty in the box, earning a penalty kick to put the Raiders up 3-2 just two minutes into the second half.

Later on, Mason McGill (Jr., Overland Park, Kan.) found the back of the net for the second time this season, doubling the Northwestern lead on a Tim Kaltenberger (So., Cologne, Germany) assist.

Kaltenberger capitalized on a penalty kick opportunity with two minutes to go to bring the match, and the regular season, to a close.

"It was good to finish the regular season on a high note. Scoring goals has been a struggle for us this season, so it was good to see the guys put five of them in the back of the net tonight," commented head coach Dan Swier. "Ryan Del Monaco and Josh Wingfield had standout performances to get us going in the first half. Now we turn our attention to Midland next Thursday.
