Men's Soccer Season Ends in Conference Quarterfinals

ORANGE CITY, Iowa  – A goal from the left sideline by Midland's Gonzalo Bocaz was the deciding factor in Thursday night's Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) quarterfinal match as the Red Raiders fell to No. 5-seed Midland 1-0 at the NWC Soccer Complex.

It was a chilly night in Orange City that saw both sides fighting to gain an offensive advantage throughout. The first half went by in a scoreless tie that was highlighted by impressive plays from the back lines of Northwestern and Midland. Only eight combined shots were taken in the opening 45 minutes, as the closest chance for either side was a Ryan Del Monaco (Fr., Tea, S.D.) shot that was blocked in front of the net.

The fast and physical play continued into the second half, leading up to a Midland goal to break onto the scoreboard in the 53rd minute. A broken play off of a corner kick gave Bocaz a chance to fire a shot from near his own bench, which skipped past the Raider defense to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

Northwestern found themselves with shot opportunities late, including an attempt from Niklas Fitter (So., Sankt Augustin, Germany) at 69' that was saved by Midland goalkeeper Matthew Ricci.

Ultimately, the Warriors were able to advance to the conference semifinals, notching their fourth shutout in six matches.

MATCH NOTES
  • Midland led in shots 13-9 and in shots on goal 7-4.
  • Ezekiel Foltz (Jr., Sioux Center, Iowa) notched six saves to bring his career total to 347.
  • Tim Kaltenberger (So., Cologne, Germany) attempted two shots on goal and four total shots.
Up Next: The Raiders' season comes to a close, while Midland will hit the road to take on top-seeded Hastings on Tuesday, November 8.
