Raiders Come Back from Halftime Deficit for First Win

Van Kalsbeek records second consecutive double-double

MAYVILLE, N.D.  – (RV) Northwestern (1-1, 0-0 GPAC) used a second-half surge to come away with their first win of the 2022-23 season on Saturday, erasing an 18-point halftime deficit to defeat Mayville State (0-2, 0-0 NSAA) 79-75 on the road.

Early in the first half, the two teams traded leads before Northwestern jumped ahead on six-straight points from Alex Van Kalsbeek (Jr., Orange City, Iowa) to go ahead 18-15 with 10:38 left to play in the opening frame. The Comets then went on a run over the next three minutes, outscoring the Raiders 14-2 during the stretch. The home team's three-point deficit at the 10-minute mark ballooned to an 18-point lead at halftime, with the score 46-28.

"Mayville State played an excellent first half," commented head coach Kris Korver. It was quite  a comeback by this group of Raiders."

Northwestern started on the comeback trail at the 18:43 mark as Matt Onken (R-Jr., Marshall, Minn.) opened up a 19-2 scoring run that put the Raiders down three with about 12 minutes remaining.

It was not until a pair of free throws by both Dillon Carlson (Sr., Ankeny, Iowa) and Van Kalsbeek pushed Northwestern in front for the first time in the second half. Both teams battled to retain an advantage before a Conner Geddes (So., Sioux Falls, S.D.) three put the Raiders ahead by eight, forcing Mayville State to put the Raiders at the stripe down the stretch, icing away a Northwestern win.

"We competed in the second half. We were unselfish, we executed, and we made some great plays," said Korver. "Our guys made free throws down the stretch and we got quality minutes from our bench."
