Men's Basketball Falls in Season Opener

Van Kalsbeek notches 15th career double-double

VALLEY CITY, N.D.  – The (RV) Northwestern (0-1, 0-0 GPAC) Red Raider men's basketball team traveled north to play the Vikings of Valley City State (N.D.) (1-0, 0-0 NSAA) in tonight's season debut, where the Vikings scraped out a 91-83 win on Friday night.

Northwestern opened the game on a 7-3 run, ended by a Conner Geddes (So., Sioux Falls, S.D.) three before VCSU battled back and exchanged the lead with the Raiders through the midway point of the first half. The Red Raiders then went on a 9-0 run over the next two minutes on baskets by Geddes, Matt Onken (R-Jr., Marshall, Minn.), and Craig Sterk (Sr., McBain, Mich.).

Down 40-36 with under three minutes until halftime, Grant DeMeulenaere (Sr., Altoona, Iowa) buried two-straight three-pointers followed by a Dillon Carlson (Sr., Ankeny, Iowa) trey to tie the game at 45-45 before the Vikings scored the final four points of the half.

The Red Raiders played from behind for a majority of the second half before retaking the lead 73-72 on a Kaleb Booth (Fr., Carroll, Iowa) three at 7:19. Alex Van Kalsbeek (Jr., Orange City, Iowa) scored the next four for Northwestern to put the Raider advantage at 76-74. However, with just under five minutes left to play in the game, VCSU's Daevonte Munson knocked down a three, giving the Vikings a lead that they would not relinquish the rest of the way.

"You have to tip your cap to VCSU," said head coach Kris Korver. "They played well on their home floor. Rebounding and turnovers definitely hurt us tonight."
