No. 4 Northwestern Routs Doane 59-10 for Sixth-Straight Win

Red Raiders put up 500+ yards of offense for the fifth time this season

CRETE, Neb. – For the fifth time this season, the No. 4-ranked Northwestern College football team (6-1, 6-1 GPAC) put up 500+ yards of offense and dominated the Doane Tigers (3-4, 3-4 GPAC) 59-10 for their sixth-straight win of the season. Senior wide receiver Michael Storey notched his eighth-career 100-yard receiving game in the win.
"The defense played outstanding," noted head coach Matt McCarty. "Ben did a good job of filling in for Tanner (Oleson) and made a couple of great plays!"

The contest could be summed up in the first two drives. Doane received the opening kick, going three-and-out. Northwestern would respond by going eight plays for 56 yards as Jalyn Gramstad (So., Lester, Iowa) finished off the drive with a seven-yard touchdown scamper to make it 7-0. Near the end of the first quarter, Logan Meyer (So., Alvord, Iowa) punched the rock in from one-yard out to take the 14-0 lead.

Doane opened the scoring in the second quarter with a 21-yard field goal, after Northwestern's defense held firm. Northwestern would respond to that field goal with three unanswered touchdowns, jumping out to a 35-3 lead with under five minutes left in the half. Gramstad, Meyer, and Konner McQuillan (Jr., Leavenworth, Kan.) all scored in that span. The Tigers would score just before the half, thanks to a 16-yard touchdown toss from Cruz Kirwan to Colby Frazier.

Midway through the second quarter, freshman linebacker Ben Egli (Fort Dodge, Iowa) recorded his first-career interception, picking off Cruz Kirwan's pass at the Doane 11-yard line which would lead to the one-play and Meyer touchdown score (21-0 NWC).

Though the Tigers put up 10 points in the first half, the half was completely dominated by the Red Raiders with the 35-10 lead at the break. The Raider defense held the Tigers to -15 rushing yards in the first half. The offense scored all five touchdowns on the ground.

The scoring pace slowed up in the second half, but it was Northwestern who pitched the second half shutout, scoring 24 unanswered points. The passing game came alive in the third quarter as Gramstad began airing the ball out. He would first find Storey (Sr., Spencer, Iowa) for a 28-yard touchdown strike. The very next drive would be a three-play series capped by an explosive 37-yard touchdown strike from Gramstad to Tanner Schouten (So., Orange City, Iowa), bringing Schouten's season touchdown total to three.

Late in the third quarter, Egli's name would be called yet again as he picked off his second pass of the day near midfield. The pick would setup the three-play, 52-yard drive that ended with the strike to Schouten.

The final quarter would see the sixth – and final – touchdown score of the day as McQuillan punched it in for the second time on the day from five yards out. It capped an eight-play, 80-yard drive. With just seconds left on the clock, junior kicker Eli Stader (Cedar Grove, Wis.) would hit a 43-yard field goal to make the final score 59-10.

"Noah (Van't Hof) did a great job against the run, playing at linebacker in the second half," concluded McCarty "Our offense did a great job capitalizing on short fields."
