YORK, Neb. -- For the second straight outing, the Northwestern College women's soccer team (3-3, 0-0 GPAC) scored late, this time downing the Panthers of York College (1-4, 0-0 KCAC) 1-0; pitching back-to-back shutouts. The win this afternoon achieves what the team didn't do until October 31 last season, picking up their third win of the season.
The first half saw an early offensive push from the Raiders earning a number of corners putting early pressure on the Panther defense. Some back and forth action would commence and neither team could get much of a consistent rhythm going for most of the first half. The Panthers offensive attack made a late first half push earning a corner and getting a shot on goal. Junior goalkeeper
Kaelin Alons (Orange City, Iowa/Unity Christian) made the save and the score was deadlocked at halftime 0-0.
The second half saw much of the same as the first. Each team pieced together their respective offensive attacks, not resulting in any conversions. A late attack by the Raiders was beautifully put together with a long ball up the sideline and a touch back for a shot on goal, but still no conversions were to be had. In the 89
th minute the Raiders' offense finally broke through and found the back of the net.
Katie Jacob (Jr., Zimmerman, Minn./Zimmerman) converted the game's lone goal off of an assist from Sophomore forward
Abby Noonan (Carlisle, Iowa/Carlisle).
The Raiders out shot the Panthers (16-10) with nine of those shots being on goal. Alons had another solid performance in the net with five saves and playing the entirety of the match. Her season record now improves to 3-3-0.
Already this season, the Raiders offense has exploded, scoring half as many goals (6) as the team did a season ago (12) in six matches.
Up Next: The Raiders travel to Omaha, Neb. to open up Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) play when they battle the Flames of College of Saint Mary next Wednesday, September 15 with kickoff set for 3:00 p.m.
