YANKTON, S.D. – The No. 23-ranked Northwestern College men's soccer team (8-1-1, 4-0 GPAC) survives upset bid against Mount Marty (3-4-1, 1-3 GPAC) in a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over the Lancers as
Adam De Boer (So., Orange City, Iowa/MOC-Floyd Valley) is the hero with the game-winner with 12 seconds remaining in double overtime.
The Raiders got off to a sluggish start in Yankton this evening as Mount Marty's Samuel Baraka was able to find the back of the net in the 6
th minute of the match. Momentum would remain with the Lancer's throughout the rest of the first 45 minutes of play, as Baraka would score again in the 32
nd minute to extend the Mount Marty lead to 2-0 heading into the half.
At a point in time when it would be easy for any team to give in, the No. 23-ranked Raiders would have none of that attitude heading into the second half of play. Immediately out of the break,
Johannes von Saldern (So., Jena, Germany/Otto Schott Gymnasium) would find the back of the net in the 47
th minute to cut the Lancer deficit in half.
In the 61st minute,
Luke Happer (Fr., Overland Park, Kan./Saint James Academy) nets the equalizer to make the match even at 2-2. Both teams would battle out the rest of the second half with neither team able to find a goal, which sends the game into overtime.
The first overtime period went by quietly, neither team able to net the game-winner. With 12 seconds remaining in the second overtime, in the final minute of play, sophomore defender De Boer is able to net the game-winner and avoid the upset bid in the first match after being nationally-ranked for the first time in program history.
All three Raider goal scorers netted their first goals of the season in the comeback victory over the Lancers, showing that the match was a total team effort from the entire Northwestern squad.
Northwestern controlled the ball most of the match, outshooting the Lancers 24-7, as well as taking eight corner kicks to the Lancers' one. GPAC Defensive Player of the Week
Ezekiel Foltz (Jr., Sioux Center, Iowa/Sioux Center) collected three saves on the evening.
The match marked the fourth game to go into overtime for the Raiders and the second to enter double overtime.
A chippy match all the way around resulted in twelve yellow cards being issued in the match, including one red card awarded to the Mount Marty team. 28 total fouls were whistled in the match.
Up Next: The Raiders play host to the Jimmies of the University of Jamestown (3-3-2, 2-1-1 GPAC) this Saturday, Oct. 2 with kickoff set for 3:15 p.m. from the NWC Soccer Complex.
