ORANGE CITY, Iowa -- A hard fought Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) match, and a second half offensive push from the Raiders (3-6-1 (0-3-1 GPAC), ended in a 2-2 draw against the Bulldogs of Concordia (Neb.) (4-2-2, 1-0-2 GPAC).
"I am so proud of the resilience the ladies showed today. After giving up two goals they took control of the match and showed some grit. I felt that they played as a unit today," said head coach
Shannon Andringa after her team's gritty performance. "I'm bummed we couldn't find a game winner, but there is a lot we can learn from the game today."
The first half saw an aggressive Bulldog offense right out of the gate creating several shot attempts early but the Raider defense would not fold. In the 40th minute, an unfortunate bounce found a ball deflected and Madeline Haugen was fortunate enough to be on the receiving end of a breakaway goal to put the Bulldogs up 1-0 right before the half.
Immediately following the second half kickoff, Michaela Twito found the back of the net in the 46th minute putting the Raiders in a 2-0 hole. The Raiders would not be discouraged however and responded in the 55th minute with a goal of their own.
Abby Noonan (So., Carlisle, Iowa/Carlisle) netted her second goal of the season in the bottom right corner. The Raiders attack would continue to keep their foot on the gas as they created another chance in the 59th minute. Again Noonan was involved in the action as she got a shot off that ricocheted off the post and found the foot of
Emily Hurley (Sr., Pleasant Hill, Iowa/Grand View Christian) her shot attempt was saved by a defender. The ball then found the foot of Junior midfielder
Julie Dunlap (Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) who struck a shot that hit a defender's arm resulting in a penalty kick opportunity for the Raiders. Senior midfielder
Brenna Rauwerdink (Oostburg, Wis./Oostburg) stepped up and put the penalty away to tie the game a two. The rest of the second half saw both teams make their separate attacks, but to no avail as the time ran out the score was still deadlocked at two.Â
The first overtime period saw a lot of chances for the Bulldogs. A pair of corners and three shots by Concordia were taken care of by the Raider defense. Dunlap booted a long attempt in the 99th minute that barely sailed over the crossbar and a second overtime was eminent.
The final overtime period saw more of the same from both teams but neither could find the back of the net as the game would conclude as a draw.Â
The Bulldogs out shot the Raiders 26-16 for the game. The Raiders' offense was able to get ten of their attempts on goal. The Raider defense made a number of plays on the ball to stifle Bulldog attacks. Junior keeper
Kaelin Alons (Orange City, Iowa/Unity Christian) made 12 saves on the day.Â
