Raiders Stumble at Home

Story Links

ORANGE CITY, Iowa -- The Northwestern College women's soccer team fell to the Morningside University Mustangs by a score of 4-1, dropping their record to 3-6 (0-3, GPAC).

The Raiders continued their stretch of home games with a tough match against the Mustangs earlier tonight. The Raiders' offense created some early chances and put some pressure on the Mustang defense but couldn't put the finishing touches on their attacks. The rest of the first half saw both teams creating chances but neither could finish off the opportunities and the score at the midway point was 0-0.

The second half brought more offensive excitement from both squads. Early in the second half a pass was deflected by Kaelin Alons (Jr., Orange City, Iowa/Unity Christian) and found the foot of a Mustang player. The shot ricocheted off of the post and a great attempt by a Raider defender fell short as it deflected in for an own goal and resulted in the first Morningside goal in the 50th minute. Victoria Stausholm volleyed an assist from Ebba Torgner to score the Mustangs second goal in the 57th minute. The Raider offense couldn't quite find their rhythm or create any clean chances while the Mustang attack took control of possession. In the 60th minute Morningside found the back of the net again off of a defensive deflection to make the score 3-0. A 62nd minute attack from the Raiders came together beautifully as Emily Hurley (Sr., Pleasant Hill, Iowa/Grand View Christian) found Katie Jacob (Jr., Zimmerman, Minn./Zimmerman) who struck a shot into the bottom left corner just out of the keeper's reach to make the score 3-1 in favor of the Mustangs. In the 69th minute a long shot from distance by Ebba Torgner found the top right corner to wrap up the scoring on the night and gave Morningside the 4-1 victory.

The Raiders offense nearly matched the Mustangs on shot attempts with 13 to Morningside's 16. Junior keeper Alons was able to notch out six saves on the night but couldn't quite keep the Mustangs from finding the back of the net allowing three goals and dropping her record in the net to 3-6.

Up Next: The Raiders will look to bounce back on Saturday, Sept. 25, with another GPAC matchup against Concordia. The match will be played at the NWC Soccer Complex in Orange City, Iowa with kickoff set for 1:00 p.m.
