ORANGE CITY, Iowa -- The Northwestern College men's tennis team defeated the Morningside University Mustangs 6-1 in a non-conference matchup earlier today, Sept. 21, as they improve to 2-0 on the early season.
The Raiders competed against the Mustangs' top three players, as Morningside did not field a complete team for the matchup.
Brian Vanden Berg (Jr., Mason City, Iowa/North Iowa Christian) lost a very close match 6-4 and 7-6 in a 7-5 tiebreaker to Jamie Maza.
David Bomgaars (Fr., Aurora, Colo./Valor Christian) dominated the number two singles match winning by a score of 6-1, 6-3 to defeat Gabe DeLeo. Freshman
Collin Harmelink (Sioux Fall, S.D./Sioux Falls Christian) won in a third set super tiebreaker over Danny O'Brien to round out the singles matchups. Harmelink won the first set 7-5 but dropped the second set 4-6, and pulled out the victory 10-3 in the super tiebreaker to win the matchup.
The combination of VandenBerg and Bomgaars defeated the Morningside pairing of Maza and O'Brien by a score of 6-2 in the only doubles matchup between the two teams.
The number four, five, and six singles were forfeited by Morningside due to there only being three players. The same result occurred in the number two and three doubles matches.
