Porepp's Home Run Leads To Game One Win and Sweep vs Dordt

Mason Porepp hit a three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to give the Northwestern College baseball team a 5-2, extra-inning win in game one of a GPAC doubleheader against Dordt. The late-inning momentum continued into the nightcap as the Raiders downed Dordt 8-5 to complete the sweep.

Tied 2-2, Noa Vogel reached base on a one-out walk and advanced to second after a two-out single from Kip Cullinan. Porepp then stepped to the plate and drove the first pitch over the left field fence, his third home run of the season, to put his team in front 5-2.

Brady Roberts pitched around a leadoff walk in the bottom of the ninth to convert his first save of the season. Dylan Kirkeby earned his third win of the season and dominated the Dordt hitters for seven innings. The freshman struck out a career-high 11, walked one and gave up just seven hits, all singles, and one run.

Dordt grabbed a 1-0 lead on three singles in the bottom of the first, the final one by Chase Edwards, off Northwestern starter Ryan Reynolds. The Raiders tied the game in the fourth on a double steal by Jaden Snyder, who reached base on a bunt single, and Hunter Rynders, who was running for Gavin Lorenzen.

The score remained tied at one until the top of the seventh when Cullinan put his team in front with a two-out, RBI single that plated Evan Olesen. The Defenders, however, forced extra innings on a Logan Cline RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

Northwestern totaled eight hits, two by Cullinan and one from six other Raider batters. Colton Harold had the team's other extra-base hit, a double to lead off the fifth inning.

Nick Yeager (3-3) pitched the final three innings and took the loss for the Defenders. John Emerson had three hits to pace the 10-hit Dordt offense.

Northwestern raced out to a 6-1 lead in game two and held off a late Dordt rally to earn the sweep. Evan Olesen (1-2) picked up his first win of the season, giving up seven hits and three runs over the middle five innings. Ethan Buckner and Ben Zeutenhorst both pitched one inning, giving up a run.

Olesen was one of three Raiders with two hits, going 2/3 with an RBI and run scored in the leadoff spot. Vogel (2/3, RBI) and Sutton Derr (2/4, 2 runs), along with Jaden Snyder (1/3, run, RBI), were the other leaders at the plate.

Head Coach Brian Wede's squad scored two runs in each of the first, second and fourth innings plated a single run in the final two frames.

Dordt's Willem Hoekstra (0-1) was handed the loss, giving up four runs in 1.1 innings. Logan Cline totaled three hits to lead the Defenders offense.
