Raiders Fall to Tough Triton Squad

Tuesday, October 5, 2021

ORANGE CITY, Iowa -- Less than 24 hours after leaving the court the Northwestern College men's tennis team (3-1) returned to face the Tritons of Iowa Central Community College (3-0), the result however was the reverse of yesterday's outing.

"We battled hard against a really good team in Iowa Central," said head coach Monte Tilgner. "They are loaded with international players with a lot of match experience. We had several very competitive matches and were on the brink of wins in the #1 doubles, #1 singles, and #2 singles matches."

Brian Vanden Berg (Jr., Mason City, Iowa/North Iowa Christian) and David Bomgaars (Fr., Aurora, Colo./Valor Christian) battled in their doubles match but fell 6-3 to Espinoza and Sugiyama. The pairings of Aaron Schorg (Sr., Lawton, Iowa/Lawton-Bronson) and Gavin Mulder (Fr., Sioux Falls, S.D./Sioux Falls Christian) and Collin Harmelink (Fr., Sioux Falls, S.D./Sioux Falls Christian) and Jack Roisum (So., Rapid City, S.D./Rapid City Christian) both dropped their doubles matches by a score of 6-1.

The singles matches included competitive matchups but all went the way of the Tritons. Vanden Berg droped his match by a score of 6-4, 6-3. Bomgaars battled and dropped the first set 6-4 and was able to bounce back in the second, winning 1-6. In the decisive super tiebreaker Valencia of Iowa Central prevailed 10-3. Harmelink, Roisum, and Kevin Woodrow (Fr., Sheridan, Wyo./Sheridan) would find a way to win some games but were unable to take a complete set from their opponents. Nick VanRijs (Jr., Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) fell to Espinoza 6-0, 6-0.

"Brian and David played some great tennis in a close doubles match," said Tilgner. "Brian was just a few points away from flipping his match, but that is what makes this game so tough. David played by far his best of the year, especially in the second set, which he dominated 6-1. He then lost a super tiebreaker that was played for the third set. As a team we had a very successful fall season, finishing 3-1 and are looking forward to a great spring season. I know the guys will keep playing more this fall, over the winter in November and December until we start up again in January."
