Raiders Dominate Mount Marty in Non-Conference Clash

Tuesday, October 5, 2021

ORANGE CITY, Iowa -- The Northwestern College men's tennis (2-0, 0-0 GPAC) team matched up with the Lancers of Mount Marty University (0-1, 0-0 GPAC) last night, Oct. 4, and came away victorious by a score of 7-0 improving the team's record to 2-0 on the early season.

Head coach Monte Tilgner had this to say about the win, "We played well tonight against Mount Marty. They only had five players due to a soccer conflict, so they did have to forfeit the #3 doubles and #6 singles match. We dominated the double matches, with Brian and David winning 6-0 and Collin and Jack won 6-1. In singles, Brian played well against a pretty good player and won 7-5, 6-1. David played the best of his freshman year and won 6-0, 6-0. Collin, Jack, and Nick also played very consistent tennis winning their matches easily. It was a good match to start the week and we will certainly be tested by a great junior college team in Iowa Central tomorrow, which will round out our fall season."

The Raiders took the doubles point with a dominant performance from the combination of Brian Vanden Berg (Jr., Mason City, Iowa/North Iowa Christian) and David Bomgaars (Fr., Aurora, Colo./Valor Christian) winning their match 6-0 in the one spot. Collin Harmelink (Fr., Sioux Falls, S.D./Sioux Falls Christian) and Jack Roisum (So., Rapid City, S.D./Rapid City Christian) followed with a solid performance in the two spot with a 6-1 win. The third spot was a forfeit by the Lancers.

In the five singles matches that were played, Northwestern won all them all. In the number one spot Vanden Berg defeated Wagner 7-5, 6-1. Bomgaars and Nick VanRijs (Jr., Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) both defeated their opponents in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Harmelink defeated Tennant 6-2, 6-2, and Roisum defeated Nguyen 6-2, 6-1. The number six spot was a forfeit by Mount Marty.
