Raiders Down Sacramento State for First Win of the Season

Wednesday, October 13, 2021

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern College Rocket League team (1-3) picked up their first win of the season in an exciting five-game victory over the Sacramento State Hornets Tuesday evening.

The Hornets took the first game of the night 3-1. NWC's Noah Salem (Fr., Aberdeen, S.D./Aberdeen Christian) connects for the first goal of the game, but Sacramento State scored three unanswered to take the game.

The Raiders would not be deterred, erupting for five goals in game two to take the game in dominant fashion 5-2. Andrew Voss (Fr., Sioux Falls, S.D./Sioux Falls Christian) started the scoring in the opening six seconds of the game. Sac State would score the equalizer before Voss connects on his second goal. Northwestern would overextend on offense, allowing the Hornets to breakaway and score to tie things up with 2:50 left. Voss would score the game-winning goal with 1:30 left, but that would not be all for the Raiders. Voss would score his fourth goal of the game and Brady Wynia (So., Orange City, Iowa/MOC-Floyd Valley) scores his first goal of the evening, all in the final 1:30 of play.

Wynia and Voss would pair up early in the third game, as Wynia would assist a Voss goal with 3:56 on the clock. Sac State would score once again on a breakaway on an NWC overextended offense, making the score 1-1. Voss would give the Raiders a 2-1 lead before the Hornets tied the match again with 1:45, and the game would go to overtime. In a reversal of the opening goal of game three, Voss finds Wynia to give the Raiders the 3-2 game three victory, and a 2-1 series lead.

In a lower scoring game four, the Hornets would prevail with a 2-1 victory in the second overtime game of the series.

In the decisive game five, it was all Raiders as they pitched a shutout and taking the game – and match – 3-0. Voss assisted Wynia on the game-winning goal with 2:09 on the clock.
