Sydnee Isom and
Emma Schnell combined to pitch a seven-hitter in leading Northwestern to a 5-0 win over Trinity Christian in the second game played this afternoon in Tucson, Ariz. The Red Raiders dropped game one, 4-3, in eight innings.
Northwestern pushed its record to 10-4 this season, 5-1 in games played in Tucson.
Game Two: 5-0 win vs Trinity Christian
Isom (W) earned the win, giving up five hits in pitching the first five innings. The sophomore struck out one. Schnell pitched the final two innings, striking out two in picking up the save.
Northwestern broke up a scoreless game with two runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Jessica Harald singled and advance to second on a successful bunt by
Emily Bosch.
Madysn Grotewold drove in Harald with an RBI single and came around to score after a triple by
Jennifer Boeve.
Still leading 2-0, Northwestern added three insurance runs in the sixth.
Bri Giordano led off with a single, advanced to second when
Jordyn Kramer was hit by a pitch and both runners moved up after a bunt by
Emily Strasser. A passed ball and Trolls error led to the first two runs scoring and
Kaylen Kuchel drove in the third with a pinch-hit single.
Harald paced Head Coach Shane Boeve's offense with two hits while five other Red Raiders all had one hit each.
Game One: 4-3 (8) loss to Madonna
Madonna scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly with no outs in the bottom of the eight inning to defeat Northwestern 4-3 in the first game of the day.
Northwestern was unable to take the lead in the top of the eighth and with the international tie break in place, the Crusaders had a runner put at second and a successful bunt attempt moved up Brooklyn Prescott to third. Following a Red Raider pitching change, pinch hitter Jenna Gilbert drove in the winning run on fly-out to centerfield.
Emma Schnell (2-3) pitched well despite the loss, giving up five hits and one run in 5.1 innings. The junior also led the Red Raiders at the plate with two hits and a run scored. Giordano went 1-for-4 with a two RBIs.
Madonna plated three runs in the first off Northwestern starter
Samantha Ubben, who pitched the first two innings. The Red Raiders tied the game with three runs in the fifth, two coming on a two-run single from Giordano.
Northwestern was outhit 10-7.
