Sammy Blum scored 17 points and the Red Raiders forced Doane into 20 turnovers in earning an 82-55 home win this afternoon at the Bultman Center.
Northwestern sweeps the season series against the Tigers and pick up its second consecutive win, improving to 9-9 in the GPAC, 14-9 overall.
Blum scored in double figures for the 20th time this season, netting 17 points on 8-of-17 from the floor.
Alexis Toering was one rebound shy of a double-double, contributing 14 points and nine rebounds, and
Taylor VanderVelde scored 12 points. Both
Devyn Kemble and
Maddie Jones added 11 points each, a career-best for Jones, giving Head Coach
Chris Yaw's squad five players in double figures.
Both teams went on scoring runs early as Northwestern ran off the first eight points on three-pointers from Kemble and VanderVelde along with a jumper by Toering. Doane came right back with an 8-2 run, cutting the Red Raider lead down to two, 10-8, after a three-pointer by Haylee Heits. Northwestern closed the quarter with a 15-3 run, limiting the Tigers to just one basket over the final six minutes to take a 25-11 advantage.
A Toering basket at the start of the second quarter extended the Red Raider scoring run and the teams traded baskets for the rest of the quarter. Northwestern pushed the lead to 20 briefly, on a jumper by Jones, but the lead was 15, 40-25, by halftime.
Northwestern once again pushed the lead to 20 (51-31) on a basket from Toering with 5:59 left in the third quarter and a 10-5 surge put the Red Raiders up 65-39 by quarters end.
By the numbers, Northwestern had the advantage in nearly every facet, shooting 50% for the game compared to 40% by Doane. The Red Raiders held a 39-32 edge on the glass and committed only nine turnovers compared to by Doane. Northwestern overcame a cold shooting night from the perimeter, making 4-of-24 three-pointers for 17%.
Heits led Doane with 19 points and seven boards.
