Northwestern was outscored 23-13 in the fourth quarter in its 78-68 loss to No.9 Morningside in the final game of the regular season for both teams. The Red Raiders had their five game win streak snapped and end the regular season in the sixth place with a 12-10 record, 17-10 overall.Â
Morningside ends the regular season with a 16-6 record and in third place in the GPAC; 22-8 overall.Â
Tied 55-55 at the end of the third quarter, a three-point play by
Taylor VanderVelde put Northwestern in front for the final time, 59-58, at the nine-minute mark. Morningside then converted three straight three-pointers, two from Sierra Mitchell who leads the GPAC in three-pointers made, to give the Mustangs a 67-59 advantage.Â
Emilee Danner came back with a three-pointer, cutting the deficit to five, but another Mitchell three-pointer, her third and final of the game, put Morningside back up eight, 70-62. Consecutive baskets by
Alexis Toering sliced the Mustangs' lead down to six at the two minute mark, the closest Northwestern would get the rest of the way.
Sammy Blum led Northwestern with 26 points, making 6-of-10 three-pointers, and joined Toering (11 points, 8 rebounds) in double figures.
Devyn Kemble and
Jada Cunningham contributed eight points each. Northwestern shot 38% from the field, 46% (10/22) from the arc.Â
Close throughout the entirety of the contest, the game featured 10 ties and 13 lead changes. Northwestern had the momentum early, opening up a six-point lead (11-5) following a three-pointer from
Devyn Kemble with 5:40 left in the first quarter. A 15-2 Morningside run, spearheaded by junior guard Faith Meyer with eight points, put the visitors up 20-13. Northwestern outscored the Mustangs 9-4 over the final three minutes to make it a two-point game by quarters end, 24-22.Â
Morningside extended its lead to five, 42-37, by halftime, but a couple of Blum three-pointers early in the third tied the score at 48. The teams played even for the final five minutes of the quarter, resulting in a 55-55 tie at the start of the final period.Â
Taylor Rodenburgh led Morningside with 15 points, followed by Sydney Hupp (14), Sophia Peppers (13) and Mitchell (11). The Mustangs shot 44% for the game, 36% (10/28) from the three-point line.Â
Northwestern outrebounded Morningside 39-35; turnovers were in the Mustangs favor, 15-10.
