Samantha Ubben pitched a complete-game, seven-hitter in leading the Red Raider softball team to a 7-3 win over NCAA D-III University of Minnesota Crookston in game one of two played today at the Kelly Laas Memorial Tournament. Northwestern defeated Viterbo in game two 6-2 behind the pitching of
Emma Schnell.
The Red Raiders are now 4-2 on the season.
Game One: 7-3 win vs Minnesota Crookston
Ubben limited UMC to seven hits, three runs and struck out eight in pitching the first complete game of the season for Head Coach
Shane Bouman's squad. The junior gave up two runs in the third and one more in the fourth and retired UMC in order in three of the seven innings.
Northwestern totaled 11 hits against two Golden Eagles pitchers, led by
Emily Bosch who went 3-for-5, including a double, with two runs scored at the top spot of the order.
Bri Giordano and
Jessica Harald both continue to swing a hot bat, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.
Emily Strasser,
Jennifer Boeve,
Madysn Grotewold and Schnell had the other hits.
The Red Raiders scored three in the top of the first inning and did not trail against UMC. Giordano drove in Bosch, who led off the game with a single, and Northwestern capitalized on two Golden Eagles miscues leading to the final two runs.
Northwestern added two more runs in each of the second and third innings. Boeve smacked a two-run single in the second and both Bosch and Haraled contributed RBI singles in the third.
Alina Avalos (0-1) took the loss for Minnesota Crookston, giving up five hits and six runs in two innings. Jordan Peterson and Malia Pula led the offense with two hits each.
Game Two: 6-2 win vs Viterbo
Jordyn Kramer drove in the winning run with an RBI single in the third and Schnell pitched 3.2 no-hit innings of relief in leading Northwestern to a 6-2 win against Viterbo in the final game.
Down 2-1 heading into the bottom of third,
Emily Strasser was hit-by-pitch and advanced to third off a double from Boeve. Giordano drove in Strasser with a ground out and Kramer came through with a two-out, RBI single to drive in Boeve to make the score 3-2.
Northwestern pushed three big insurance runs across in the fourth on an RBI triple by Schnell and a two-run single from Strasser.
Schnell (1-1) earned the win in relief, striking out four in 3.2 innings of work.
Sydnee Isom pitched the first 2.1 innings, giving up three hits and two runs.
Boeve paced the Red Raider offense, going 2-for-4 with a run; Strasser added one hit and two RBIs.
